Unable to use Safari for The Railwire

As of 2 days ago, Safari returns a message that "Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server "www.therailwire.net"."  Firefox works OK, but is not my default browser.  From other threads looks like this is also the case for IE11 too.

Confirmed. And very odd, indeed.

Tom, Apple doesn't sneak updates into our systems, we have to go get them. Also, useful to note that my Safari is box-stock, without any extensions or add-ons. I keep it this way for the express purpose of accessing sites that have trouble with my default Firefox and the suite of extensions I keep on it.

This and the IE11 problem have to be a server-side issue.

If you mean inferior to Chrome (the green line), then sure, but the second most globally used browser on the web - I wouldn't call "inferior".

The whole of the web is requiring https to become the default. It's more difficult to get in between - with man in the middle attacks and its better to have both sides of the connection encrypted. That's what Safari, Chrome, and almost everyone are pushing right now.

Sadly from a web development standpoint Safari has been slowly creeping into the IE realm of workarounds for fixing its 'idiosyncrasies'.

No problems using my *VERY, VERY* inferior Seamonkey browser. I would even call it a fringe browser.

Seamonkey doesn't count, Pete. It's just a fork of Mozilla, as is Firefox. And is Opera still around?

I had no idea that Chrome had become such a force majeur. That is scary, given Google's well-earned rep for snoopware. Is it because of Android's dominance in the worldwide phone market? That Safari is second is completely explainable by iPhones and iPads.

Works just fine for me.  Sounds as if some middle-man is trying to say they are "therailwire" and the secure sockets layer is saying "umm no"

What is your base OS?

Granted, but that statistic is heavily weighted by mass-consumer sites versus niche and forum sites like TRW, which are clumsy as hell on a phone.

Base OS in my case is OSX 10.10.5. Man-in-the-middle would be at the DNS level... I think... and would break any browser on the same system and network. Yes? No? I dunno...

EDIT: Safari has no problem with TRW on my iPad2 and iPhone6, both current OS.

Root level certificates (big blobs of data that get used with math that I barely can understand) get updated in the OS, not the browser.

Do you have all the latest security updates installed on your Mac?

10.10.5 is a few years old, right?  (Yeah, I know I am probably the only person running the absolute bleeding edge here— especially in a train room)

I'm current on security updates, at least for 10.10.

Yeah, 10.10.5 may be old, but I have been burned so many times by OSX updates breaking big-dollar apps, coding and hardware investments that I refuse to upgrade any more. Yosemite was forced on me only because I had to replace my primary computer. As it was I went through quite a bit of trouble getting Bootcamp with Win7 to work on it; 10.11.x would have made that impossible.

Heck, I keep several G4s around because of custom software written for OS9 that's way too costly to port.

Apple's legacy support used to be great... now, not so much. Or even not at all. Simply put, the trust has been broken. If I was still working, I'd be continuing where I left off with retirement, porting stuff to Linux, where I had a love/hate relationship, too, where updates would inevitably invoke Dependency Hell. But at least stuff wasn't being deliberately trashed.
