Both good choices.

A semi-funny with the SL2 - I chose it over the T7i mostly for the compact size. That worked against me once on the trip out West. Put even a medium lens on it with my light "travel" tripod, the body is so light the rig wants to tip over. It was extra-windy on one shoot of the semaphores. Train was coming, I had everything going, stepped away for a second, and the wind started to push the whole mess over. I caught it before the expensive bits hit the ground, but the resulting video is funny once you realize what happened.

Lol.

It's funny, I'm actually looking FORWARD to the relative lightness of the T7i after my current Panzer Tank 40D.

Generally, you're going to get camera snobs saying you must buy the most expensive camera imaginable to get photos people won't laugh at.
Nonsense. I know a guy who shoots with bargain-basement stuff (both 35MM and digital) and gets amazing results. For best results, the high percentage of what makes a good photograph is the stuff behind the viewfinder (the grey matter and the eyes attached to it).
But as for me, I splurged when I was last in NYC in 2015, I went to the massive B&H store in Manhattan, buying a T6i. I've been published several times with the shots I've gotten from it and the shots of my layout here were taken between that and my cell phone for angles no SLR can get: https://www.flickr.com/photos/53587910@N05/albums/72157668176638961
