Rivarossi Big Boy

A club member has just purchased an HO Scale Rivarossi Big Boy (DCC/Sound).

The locomotive is very jerky, though as you throttle back it sometimes runs good just before stopping.

It was purchased on ebay from Canada (we are in Australia), the seller advised him it is new and that he must have a track voltage of no more than 12 volts and requires an additional controller for the sounds, this sounds rather strange to me.

I have run it on the clubs NCE systems (a Powercab and a Powerhouse), did a precautionary reset, all sounds are fine as are the lights, the locomotive runs without the tender, so obviously pickup is only on the locomotive, I have heard that the pick-up is limited to one wheel on each side of the loco, can anyone verify this and what sort of cure is there for it if this is the case.

Along with this, can anyone point me in the right direction for dismantling the loco please.
