How about a 1965-vintage insulated 20K SHPX tank car? Like the one in the attached RMC feature. Good-sized early cars are hard to find.

April 2001 RMC - Mike Pagano did a walk-through on how to kitbash these easily from a Walthers/Life Like SW9/1200 and an Atlas GP7/9 shell. Message me your email address and I can provide you a scan of the article.

Haven't seen the article, but I can't imagine that being a simple kitbash if going for accuracy. From what I can tell, the entire hood is taller than the SW9/1200, with a the bottom of the doors sitting higher off the walkway (notice there's a band under the doors on the SW10 that's not present on the SW9/1200). Also, it appears the front cab windows are sized and arranged a little differently due to the taller hood. That said, one could probably skip the taller hood and different cab windows and still have a reasonably convincing representation with the gp7/9 radiator mods mentioned.

During your break, Model Railroader accepted my article on the TP56/70.

Which  if/when they finally publish it.... it will generate some sales for you in N and HO I should hope and expect.
I of course gave you credit and pointed people to your Shapeways spot.

If you feel like it, you could do some more work on it.
Your current model is closer to a TP70.
Could use a few minor tweaks (like a mod to the brake assembly).

From there, a more accurate TP56 would be easy.

If you're looking for freight cars, I can give you 50 ideas just from the 60's.  Tank cars are sorely needed but are probably the most work.  The simplest place to start would be 52'-53'6" flat cars. 

Personally,  I'd like to see a 53' 6" composite gondola.  Specifically one that can have interchangeable side panels from wood slates to metal to old gondola ends like the RI had or even none for other conversions.

But I feel hands down, the biggest hole from the 50s, 60s and even 70s maybe is a 40" URTX steel meat reefer.  But that really requires a RTR setup because of all the complex artwork and paint schemes.  Not sure why Atlas hasn't filled this void since they've done much of the artwork in O already.

If we're getting into freight cars here, how about an Type 21 tank in 8000 and 10000 gallons? Really, any tank car from the teens to the 40s would be good.

I never read the article or noted the outcome's accuracy, for all I know it did address what you mentioned. I just remembered the article existed and I had a copy of it, and am always happy to help a fellow modeler on his path to actually modeling; rather than wishing someone would release a ready-made version of something.

First... Flexcoil trucks for the Atlas SD50 and Intermountain SD40-2. PLEASE!

If you do a full kit with etched parts:
Staley/Tate & Lyle 19k corn syrup cars.
13k acid tank.
Comet II/Horizon commuter cars. These would need an etched roof and sides on an RP or resin core.
ACF Flexi Flow.
Large capacity exterior ribbed plastics hopper. These became popular in the 90's and would break up long strings of Centerflows.
Jordan Spreader.

Since you mentioned Flexi FLow cars.... I'd love to see class 963H and 996H Flexi Flow cars with the two fat ribs along the side as well as having the correct hatches on the roof.  These cars had at least four owners: NYC, PC, CR, and MDTX.

Also, another vote for the large plastics hoppers.

Good suggestions all around. I'll need drawings or an HO scale car to reference dimensions, so to increase the chances of something being made I'd appreciate if finding drawings or an appropriate model was already done. For the moment I am seriously considering the following:

Conrail coil shield (G52V) - I can't seem to find anywhere to buy an exactrail model of this car, so drawings would be nice
53' 6" GSC flat car - same as the exactrail HO scale model, much more plentiful at the moment

I don't want to jump headfirst into a big hopper or tank car project because those involve much more complex molds. But looks like next I might be due for a big plastics hopper.
