I know- but I'm finding that trading can be an effective way for me to do some cad.  Do you have 20 old Lima P70's?   :D :D

I have one of those p70s with me i think lol. We might have created a monster john!

The Dyno car design is now complete, but I need ATSF fan to help me understand something.

The image below from @draskouasshat shows a set of wheels, just behind the archbar style truck, and bracketry contacting the rails, just behind the archbar style truck, and the text of the article claims this was raised and lowered to collect Dyno data.  Article staes the car was built in 1912.

This is a 50's era image and not the top of the rails behind a different style truck- No wheels or bracketry.

Earlier this mothn I asked in a different thread what class the truks in the second image were.  @Dirk Jan Blikkendaal later offline told me that the ATSF made one-off truck sall the time, which makes sense for this car.

Now I think the trucks were a revers vwersion of an electric power truck to provide dyno data.  No evidence of that though, just a guess.

All this leads to a question for those who wan the kit:

@Cajonpassfan et al., Should I make two kits or only the 1950's version? It would be very easy for me to provide both versions:

The early version would come with the wheels and bracketry, and the customer would provide MT archbars. less $$

The late version would come with my truck design and no dyno wheelsets.  Little more $$

This sounds bad, but I've NEVER noticed that the drawing had archbars! I guess I've always visualized the later trucks.
My votes for later trucks as most of us model after 1940-45ish anyways.

It's not bad of you, I think it's quite interesting to have evidence of change. Besides, it does not need to be either/or. I can easily offer both.

It looks like the dyno wheelset has been moved to underneath the middle ladder of grab irons for the 40s-50s version.

@GhengisKong top of the rail is visible all the way down. It would not make sense to move it. The actual dyno is only on the short end according to the floor plan that Adam sent. The opposite end is all crew quarters.

I didn't know if it was retractable or not. It does sort of look like a wheel though under the ladder.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ] DynoMITE! Great news!
As to the archbars, I wouldn't bother; according to Early Diesel Daze by John B. McCall, the car was built by Crawford Manufacturing in 1910 and shipped to Santa Fe on archbar trucks for finishing. Quoting the book, "The arch-bar trucks were replaced almost immediately with those shown in this photo" (undated but clearly very early photo below). The car was originally numbered 99998, and renumbered 29 in December 1911.

So it would appear there was no 50's version. The book is silent about the funky wheel. I'll look through my too-voluminous and not best organized files

The book does note the car was loaned out to other roads, including the UP, to test their equipment. Opens up the market a little bit...

Otto K.

PS: I appears I can't upload again, so no pic, frustrating; new server issues?
(The trucks in the referenced but "invalid" photo do look like the new ones).

in a follow up to Otto's post, the one clean photo in Early diesel Daze shows the later trucks, I have no photos that show the arch bar trucks. Business and Special Purpose cars book, Frank M. Ellington & Joseph W. Shine on page #204 has two excellent side view pics from 4/4/51, notes say "Santa Fe had been testing locomotives since 1905 and borrowed Dynamometer cars from Scranton and Westinghouse, BY 1910 SANTA FE HAD CONSTRUCTED THIER OWN CAR AT THE TOPEKA SHOPS AND NUMBERED IT #29" it ended its career in February 1963. The blueprint drawing from 1917 / Richard Scholz collection does not shoe the "extra" wheels that "dropped" down and only shows circles for wheels. There are also some great interior photos in Santa Fe's Big three by S. Kip Farrington Jr. book. So I do not know who's book is right, just some more information, Looking forward to this model, Thanks for all the hard work.

OK sounds like this is leaning toward a single kit with no dyno wheels contacting the rails.

Sorry @GhengisKong , I'm just not seeing wheels back there and no wone has corroborated anything but the 1910 version for the Dyno wheel location.

Has anybody seen mention of the trucks being the dyno?

...

Lol, the Tower of Pizza is leaning, this one has fallen IMHO  :D
None of the several HO versions I'm aware of show the "fifth wheel" either.
Trying to upload pics again...
Otto

Well, damn, now I've uploaded the wrong attachment and try as I might, it won't let me clear it
Edit: the wrong attachment is now removed...

That is the worst rendering of a brass model I have ever seen.  It doesn't even look like the images online here:

I didn't think it was that bad for being 44 years old.

@wcfn100 , Sorry I did not mean to sound harsh, It's just when I see pics, nothing else compares, even "drawings" sometimes.
