Amtrak is certainly on a bad run lately. Condolences and prayers to those affected.

From what I understand, the only reason PTC has not been fully implemented on Amtrak is because of funding. Which falls back on our government, who are more concerned with making the opposite party look bad, than actually doing their jobs.

And the same government that implemented the rules of having PTC...

Both fatalities are reported to be Amtrak crew members.

It's difficult to listen to the broadcasters report on this.  "3rd similar crash that Amtrak has been involved in in the last month or so."  One was human error, missed a signal to slow down, another was a grade crossing incident and now this one being a head-on collision. Nothing similar except they all crashed.

I am so tired of this argument. Japan’s is the size of California and France (the largest country in Western Europe) is the size of two Colorado’s.  The scale of size and economies between the two makes this argument ridiculous and uninformed. 

Just for a simple argument, imagine if 2-3 midwestern states could utilize 100% of federal tax dollars instate because they were their own sovereign country, especially if they could subsidize their national defense to the rest of U.S. like most of the free world does.

Zooming in on the Google Maps photo and going back up the track in the direction the Amtrak train came from, there is a derail on the siding just inside the switch.  I can't tell if it's in the derail position or not.  If it is, the Amtrak train wouldn't have made it as far as it did.

Keep politics away guys! I realize this is difficult when discussing Amtrak, but focus on the technical issues at hand.
