The tiny brakewheel walkway looks nice too :o

I am guessing it is etched?

If they have etching capabilities now hopefully they will start running that great covered hopper.

I think that they are plastic , but thinner and see through . They use the word " cored " .

Yes, I believe that the roof running board is injection-molded styrene and the brake wheel platform is stainless steel etching.  While plastic is more fragile than metal, it won't warp and pop-off and it is more paint-friendly (and can be molded in color, like the rest of the car, before being painted).  But it is thicker than the etched metal, and the grid pattern is probably a bit more coarse than equivalent etched item.

Didn't they do laser cut paper board at one time?

Yes, they do make some detail items from laser-board.

Isn't that just their regular plastic brake wheel?

That's what it looks like to me too. Micro Trains always had very finely molded brake wheels.

I know that they used etched platforms on their Ortner cars. All of my undecs came with straight stainless platforms

They do.

AFAIK the 096 body style (PS-2 3-Bay High Side Covered Hopper) uses etched paper or card board. In my opinion, it looks nice.

You know, the more I look at the photo of that boxcar, the more it looks like laser-cut Laserboard (resin-impregnated paper product).  So maybe it is similar to what they used on that hopper.

But the boxcar has a corner grab iron. Has to be plastic.
