If we're talking small steam, I'd say the CP 2-6-0s that are in tourist service would be brilliant.

Is the C40-8M an exact match for the Atlas mechanism? Not sure if they would work together on such a thing but it might make such a specific locomotive feasible.

I'm not sure about the mech but for sure they would have to tool a truck as the CN and BCR C40-8m (8-40CM?) had a unique shorter wheels base truck.

I'm a little bit hoping that they don't announce the C40-8 in N scale. I have two Briggs models kits painted and awaiting mechanism tuning and I would really like to finish them. Obviously I still could but once there is an easy way out, there's less incentive. I have a 90% complete (just some mechanism fiddling needed) A-1-A GMD-1 that will likely never get done for that reason.

All that said. The locos are out of my price range now with DCC and sound so ill have to finish these anyway.

After the build up on Facebook- "We do have at least three N scale locomotives to announce this year though so don't panic!"- I think most modelers are disappointed that they did not announce anything over the weekend.  Big show and all.  But not to worry, I won't panic.  It's not like Kato is gonna stop making F units anytime soon.

Few manufacturers can, Walthers being the worse of the lot. I know marketing dollars, outside of catalogs and advertisements, are short in the hobby, but it just strikes me as awkward that no one seems to give much creadance to market research and has paid enough attention to notice that N scale modelers are not on the same curve of era and scenic/structure treatment as HO. And this informs the three largest product segments - locos, rolling stock, and structures.


If 3d printing could work out its kinks, its purveyors could gain a serious sharehold of hobby spending from the more diehard factions. It's much easier to bring a product to market (granted, in a less finished state); designs can be tweaked on the fly; models can be developed easily to reflect specific prototypes without mass production stress; and the lessened overhead diminishes risk all around. Not to mention, companies like Shapeways remove a considerable amount of the effort, including manufacture (and having to do business with Chinese firms), distribution, and finance, to a degree. I suspect, however, availability of supporting aspects - trucks and wheels, drive trains, non-printed detail parts (etchings), paint and decals - might be weakened if the market swung this way.

Rapido is announcing a new loco next month, Jason went into that in great detail at the end of the newsletter.  There seems to be people that will dump on Rapido no matter what.  Honestly, I want to ignore these threads and the nonsense that emerges.  Go complain about Atlas or something.

Ok, Atlas has two different shipping schedules on their website and neither is up to date or accurate. Completely unacceptable business practice. If they can’t keep it up date then remove it.  Does this make you feel better??

And he doesn't say the loco announcement next month will be an N scale model.  Perhaps it will be, but one notes that with Rapido as with most manufacturers, if they specify N scale, they are talking about N scale.  If they don't specify a non-HO scale, then they are talking about HO. It won't likely matter to me even if it is in N, as he used the term "modernish"- which I am guessing means well after 1956.

And Jason brought this on himself by launching an N scale vaporware campaign on Facebook.

I am very impressed with most of the Rapido equipment I have.  But I did pay a premium price for that nice equipment, and their pre-order/no inventory policy means that I ended up (so far) owning fewer passenger cars than I would had I been able to buy more passenger cars in later years.
