The Intermountain N Scale Nebraska Central SD40-2s arrived last week, so I set out and was able to find a pair out in the wild too!

CN northbound on the Bala Sub north of Toronto at sundown.

CN has over 100 locomotives on lease presently to deal with very high traffic volumes. This unit is actually one of 12 EF44AC's that CN has purchased, but for now they're still roaming with full GECX reporting marks. GECX 2038 leading train 114 south on the Bala Sub.

CP is having a group of their 9583-9683 series AC4400's rebuilt. They're numbered in the 8100's series, as seen by 8103 here leading a ethanol train at Lovekin on the Belleville Sub. Unfortunately, the golden rodent is back.

Blink and you'll miss it............Norfolk Southern SD40-2/GP38-2 units cross Lillian Lane, Mount Bethel, PA, with the Portland turn on 19 October 2017. Word is that this traffic destined for the Delaware Lackawanna shortline will in future be diverted via a different route into Scranton and the last Portland run was on 18 Jan 2018.

I wanted to post this last Thursday but ended up getting too busy with the train show and recouping from the trip this was from.

My father-in-law has had some recent heart trouble starting with a heart attack late November, quintuple(5) by-pass surgery at the beginning of December and and then another heart attack going into full cardiac arrest two weeks ago.  Scary times for my wife's family. He's doing well now but he and his wife were living in a little town in Illinois called Nauvoo. It's about 30 miles south of Burlington, IA and 50 Miles north of Quincy, IL. I'm sure you CB&Q guys know the area, anyway it's in the middle of nowhere with Quincy being the closest hospital with cardiac care. Since they were living there on a volunteer assignment (mission as we call it) with the Mormon church they needed to come home to Utah asap. The doctors were not going let them drive 2+ days back to Utah so I went out to drive their car home so they could fly home. The closest airport with daily flights is 2 hours away so I thought to take Amtrak via the California Zephyr since it goes through Burlington. Since my wife was already out there caring for her dad, I had her pick me up. I figured it was better to take her away for an hour or so versus 4+, and the train is more fun.
If you ever have a chance to take the CZ between Salt Lake and Denver, do it, it's an absolutely beautiful trip as it follows the Colorado river.  Here are couple from inside the train.

And since the discussion turned to what a dusting of snow is. There hasn't been much out here but look how thick the ice is over the river

It was dark after that so no picture of the big ten curves coming down the mountain, but Amtrak has one of their heritage units pulling the ski train out of Denver to Faser.




That nose is a little worse for the wear.

Sorry about the travel bloggishness of this post , but like I said earlier, if you ever have the chance take this trip .

Heh, while that's true, when an ever growing number of residents have never seen snow before, a flurry generates chaos. So 5cm is a dump here. I was out north of the city booting down back roads... I love driving in snowstorms and before they're plowed, I make the most of it. Of course, up on the moraine, the accumulations are always more.

After fun, down to business, shoot a few trains in the dark.

I just heard today from someone in the business that this is indeed the case.

I'm glad I had a chance to see it last year.
