It has not been mentioned but its worth doing so... easier by a mile to replace whole trucks vs. replacing just the sideframes since you won't have to deal with all the small gears inside the truck itself.  This has been mentioned a number of times in the past in threads and articles so I thought I would throw this out here as well.

The side frames were an easy swap for me. The gears stay in place unless you get really radical and strong arm the side frames on and off.
But that's an individual's decision to make and either way you get the correct loco trucks.
And of course the photo I post has the rear truck side frame not snapped into place all the way.
Just wanted to show you good people what one looks like that is not installed correctly.

Rinkadink by comparison to GM&O (which owned the most of both models, GP30s 31 and GP35s 48, all to ICG) and Southern Railway (71 GP35s, 7 others had EMD trucks from trade-ins).

Two of the Southern GP35's with Blomberg trucks were "rebuilt" from wrecked GP30's

No they were not.  Completely different units.  SOU 2703 and 2704 were built from EMD trade-ins and were equipped when built with EMD trucks. The rebuilding of the two wrecked GP30s (SOU 2526 and 2641) came later (December '65) and had Ph. II GP35 carbodies, retaining their original numbers.

How does that contradict what he said?

The "contradiction" is that "rebuilt GP30's" 2526 and 2641 were in addition to the "7 others (that) had EMD trucks from trade-ins", specifically:

C of G 210-214

http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/other_lines/cofg/cg210.html

Southern 2703-2704

The way I see it, if 2526 and 2641 are "GP30's", it follows that this would be a "FT"

Considering some of the things GN did with steam locos, I can almost see them buying a GP body and stuffing an FT into it...

In fact, that's almost what they did.  They sent the FT to EMD, and had a new "GP5" built from it, using any part that could be salvaged.  The new units were rated at 1350 HP, the same as the FTs.  So, in a sense, that is an FT in a GP body.

Ryan,

I'll even buy the ICG GP-30 shell and old DC mechanism if you want to get rid of them!  :D

Momentary thread drift:

I'd like to swap Atlas AAR-B trucks for the F-M trucks on my Atlas H16-44. Is this a pop-out and pop-in kind of thing or is there something else I need to know?

Many Thanks,  Harry

A sideframe swap is the better route, and changing sideframes does not require disturbing the gears at all. Atlas GP7/9 trucks won't fit on the RS1, for instance, but the sideframes will...Cheaper, and more likely to work...

The SDP40F was actually a result of government regulations, specifically Nixon-era price controls.  If EMD had called it an FP40, it would have been a new model, and one set of rules would have applied.  By calling it an SDP40F, it became a modification of an existing model, and fell in a different category.

The "rebuilding" of the SDP40F was mostly a PR stunt to minimize the backlash of government spending on new F40PH's to replace them

Another good tip, thank you.

@davefoxx has hooked me up with with the good stuff! Thank you all for the help!

@davefoxx delivered the goods! Got the old trucks swapped out and the new Blomberg B trucks installed. Test ran the mechanism and it runs well. Next will be to paint the trucks to match the shell.
Thanks Dave!
