And here is the light issue.
I see now it is not the LED.  It appears to be the light pipe going up to the red lenses on the side.
Maybe they did it this was to light up the interior.
Maybe it would look less odd if the end was filled with some people.
And fully painted furniture.

The white light represents a table lamp which was on each side of the car but it's really on the bright side and needs to be toned down. Figures and interior painting will help too.
But the cars are fabulous.

Not sure if the cars are a little on the light side or not, but you should have no trouble pulling them with just about anything.

In fact, my TP70 can pull all 9 cars.

Now that's a funny sight.

I like the obs.  I will pick one up if Kato eventually makes them available in Parts.

I took the car apart at the Chicagoland RPM and noticed they're essentially light pipes that leek light out the sides and top. I plan on painting all but the very tip silver, then black and only leave the very tip clear to cut down on the nuclear brightness of it. I plan on using a function only decoder to control the lights as the rear light would be a red Mars light for the forward direction, and white mars for reverse moves. Then I would also be able to turn the "lamps on and off, AND adjust the brightness of the individual LED's.
My cousin and his partner bought the Real Coffee Creek from the CN in late 80's or very early 90's, and I was in it once while they were in the early stages of refurbishing it, so this hits real close to home for me.

Something caught my eye on my skytop car.... so I disassembled it.

As seen in the photo above, there is a slit in the black underframe.  You can see it just to the left of the weight.

My first thought was.... you could put a switch in there.   I wonder if Kato is planning on added electronics to these in the future.

The shot below shows that there is ONE lightpipe and one LED.  That surprised me a bit.  Very well designed.

Here's a close up of the board.   Looks like they could have added two LEDs if they wanted.

So looking at this shot again, I surmise a couple of things.
1.  They could add a board that goes all the way back to that slit if they wanted.  Not sure what a micro switch might control.

2.  A couple of folks have thought about adding micro LEDs.   I think it is do-able.
You could cut the light pipe just to the left of the "lamps" that stick up.   This would be just to the right of where it makes that funky split.

Then add two LEDs.  One is red for forward.  The other is white for reverse (based on what Milw fans have said.).

Then rewire the board or add a decoder.  The red LED would be on the white wire (forward) and programmed for a gyralight effect.
The white LED would be on the yellow wire.

Also, the lens in the shell on the tail light is red.  You would need to replace that with one that is clear.  That way it could show white or red depending on which LED lights it.

For you electron heads....  Here is the board.

It is double sided.  You can probably follow the traces from these pics.

Top

Bottom.  Notice there are three contacts.

The IC component has an R12 on it.

Yes, what Ron noticed is a place to add a function-only decoder Kato has been selling for a while. It is literally a plug-n-play install.
My OH has been shipped, so I'll be able to fondle (and disassemble) it soon!

The R12 6-lead component is a diode array which is wired on the circuit board as a bridge rectifier. Same component is used on Kato light boards for passenger cars and in the PORTRAM LRVs.

So do I get this right, the Skytop has the afore mentioned lights already installed?

N scale Enthusiast is offering a rib-sided MILW express box painted to match the Hiawatha.

It looks like that N Scale Enthusiast Express Box is painted to match the Fox Valley sets and not the Kato set.

OK, now that everybody is getting their Oly Hi sets and running them, this is the customary period where the complaints about bad running, stall-outs, goofy paint jobs, etc  about the new items should start up on TRW ... NOT!!!
Not with Kato stuff --  It has the Picky Peteski Seal of Approval!!  :D :D

Hey there - wait a cotton pickin' minute. No such seal has been awarded - I don' thave my set in hand yet!   :D
I'm a huge Kato fan-boy, but if they mess up I'll call them out on it.
