Does the relief of the rivets look off?

The rivets do look large but N-scale can be so unforgiving with regard to close-up photography.

The blue side rails, on the other hand, just look hosed up.

Did I see that the guys running into problems were running DC? I know that the one time I ran a DC capable DCC loco(Digitrax decoder) on DC power it ran briefly, stopped abruptly, then started smoking and filled the room with the smell of burnt electrical parts. It was so hot that I was lucky that only the decoder was damaged. Could the fact that they were trying to run the locos on DC have been the issue?

That should not be an issue.  The signal from the rails is fed into a bridge rectifier which will accept DC or DCC (which is actually DC which revereses polarity multiple times a second).  Pure or pulsing DC should be perfectly safe for decoders.

You would sort of expect there to be a "state of the art" which most or all manufacturers would strive to meet or exceed.

FVM, which is much smaller than BLI seems to be able to do it.

I guess it all comes down to the team doing the work.

Hmmm.... lacking other information, you may have stumbled into something. From the sidelines I have noticed that they were fine to OK-ish up through the Centipede. It was developments past that point where... frankly... stuff started turning to crap. I'm certainly happy with the quality of my E8s and PAs, and appreciate the level of concern shown over details, some road-specific. Anybody have any personal contact with the folks at BLI to be aware of any staff changes that might have influenced what appears to be a sea change that occurred, oh, roughly two years ago?

I don't really have a dog in this hunt, but I had been and would want to continue supporting BLI when they offer product that fits my RR, era and price point. What I'm reading and seeing in this thread is of concern.

Where is the reset switch? I tried removing the shell and was afraid I would damage it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

This is such crap, they need to hear loudly the disgust here. This is total bull#### at that price point. Anyone hear back from these clowns yet? Sorry it pisses me off that N scalers get crapped on like this. I didn't buy one as they are way out of my era.

I was looking at one at my LHS to possibly run for the open house this weekend, but I think I'm going to pass.  Might pass him a note saying to check the ones he has out before they go out the door.
