Wait a year or two and show her Kathy Millat's videos on youtube.  She'll learn a ton, and from a female MRR.

I'm assuming you've seen this:

It's a shame she'll not finish this layout and move to HO next year.

No, I said "Ed's Law."

LOL. You got me there! I'm still not used to "having a layout".

Haha!  I was looking at this train set just yesterday and considering it as a birthday or Christmas gift for Aly.  I'm still trying to figure out a good track plan.  Aly wants an up and over.  I would like to be able to run two trains.  I'm considering double tracking with no turnouts to keep it simple for her, not to mention keep the price down.  It's Unitrack; I can always rearrange and/or add turnouts later.

Just as a personal experience point, the layout I built for myself in grade school was a double track loop with one crossover and a yard to keep more than two trains on the layout at the same time. It was really nice not to have to load trains onto the tracks and pull them off every time I wanted a new train. It was much more "railroady" than 0-5-0ing everything.

For starters... the N-scale Delaware & Hudson. (http://mrr.trains.com/how-to/track-plan-database/2007/08/delaware-and-hudson) Twice around with over & under. Though the tight radius' might be a bit much for those commuter cars. And the grades would be rather steep.

@GimpLizard,

Thanks for the heads-up on that track plan.

With a little tweaking, it's perfect for Aly.  Here's the Kato Unitrack plan I created.  I added a short passing siding, just in case I do buy her that second North Pole Express train.

Would a siding just to park cars she's not using enhance that plan at all?
