I know you're following the prototype image, but the detail guy in me wants to see at least a little brick chimney poking out the top... it would immediately dissuade anyone from thinking you accidently left a wad of green dryer lint on your layout.

Then you could add another touch of whimsey by installing a rusty TV aerial on the chimney...  and maybe a vulture... which could be an indication of dear Allen's ultimate fate...

And being a materials hoarder, I'd have carved the superstructure out of a chunk of foam...  There's enough styrene under there to build an entire N scale village!!

Yeah, I went for quick and easy, so the structure has no detail worth exposure.  Maybe someday, I'll revisit it, but, as you noted, the prototype is completely covered.

Then you could add another touch of whimsey by installing a rusty TV aerial on the chimney...  and maybe a vulture... which could be an indication of dear Allen's ultimate fate...

I actually considered an aerial and a light pole near the house, so maybe these ideas will come to fruition.

And being a materials hoarder, I'd have carved the superstructure out of a chunk of foam...  There's enough styrene under there to build an entire N scale village!!

I have a pile of scrap pieces of black styrene left over from the road construction, so there was no loss here.  Conversely, I'm hoarding my 2" foam for the last bits of terraforming needed on the layout.  My foam is way more valuable to me than bits of scrap styrene.

I dig!  Having access to jobsites where crawl spaces get foam insulation panels, I have access to all the foam I can eat for the asking.  The crawl is usually 32" deep, and the panels are 48, so I have a stack of 16" x 8' foam panels come into my life every now and again.

A special thanks goes out to @John, who was kind enough to print a trash can for the exterior of my SAL station!  I’ll need to figure out a good 1980s-ish color to paint it.

Thanks again, John!

Green or black seems to be a common color

If I paint the trash can the only green that I have, it would blend with the bottom of the station and be invisible.  Black might make it hard to see, too.  I remember a trash can like this near the front door of a former employment, and the can wasn't new when I started working there in 1994.  It was either a beige or taupe color.  So, I went to my stockpile of paint.  After a shot of Tamiya primer, I sprayed a coat of Tamiya Wooden Deck Tan.  Man, these spray bombs were a pleasure to use after dealing with Rustoleum cans for the station.  Anyhow, in the picture below, the top of the trash can looks darker, but that's just a shadow from those large eaves of the station.  I think this 3D printed trash can turned out pretty good!

Yeah that color looks about right for those trash cans. You might could make the top a dark brown to both make it pop and look even more out of the eighties, but the way it is works well as is!

I love that we're having an in depth discussion of trash can colors.

I agree, the selected color scheme looks perfect.

When you always go with the lowest bidder there’s typically plenty of variety!

Haha!  That reminds me of a quote attributed to astronaut, John Glenn: "I felt exactly how you would feel if you were getting ready to launch and knew you were sitting on top of two million parts — all built by the lowest bidder on a government contract."

I believe it was actually Neil Armstrong that said that. He was a bit of a rebel. John Glenn was a company man.

Do you know what diameter white styrene rod you'll need to model the hundreds, if not thousands of cigarette butts that will be scattered around the trash can?  And are you planning to have decals made of the tan filter tips one would find on Winstons, as opposed to the all white Salems?
You're modeling North Carolina, remember.
