Carbon black cars end up in Carlisle, PA  at Carlisle Syn Tec .  They manufacture construction/roofing materials amount others.

These look like they're really nicely done.  It looks like the couplers have some nice detail on them as well (see the mouse-over photo on their web page).

I've seen carbon black cars in New Orleans on numerous occasions. Anyone have any idea who those cars could have belonged to? That's back when I was deeply into photography, so paying attention to roadnames wasn't on my list of priorities then. I'm guessing they served some of the refineries down here.

The details do look good. I love the look of the crossover platforms. But it is not a car I can run on the Skally, so my wallet is safe too. I was hoping for the 5188's in N.

Oh, if they were just 10 years earlier. Great Lakes Carbon, with a plant near where I grew up, was a big user of a car similar to the 5750 c.f. Don't know if theirs was a Thrall car, but I sure remember seeing them on the local at least a couple of times a week.

I also recall the Cities Service cars, as they had a plant just south of Mojave. Both GLC and Cities Service closed their plants (in the '80s?) because their process equipment required venting by-products to atmosphere. It was H₂S [corrected] and other ugly stuff, so when air pollution rules actually started to mean something I think they built compliant plants closer to the customers rather than use the desert winds as a huge wastebasket.

The Richardson and Cabot cars I don't know about. I'll have to pay attention to the reporting marks on the cars we see in our current location; there's a tire plant in the next town, and they have a couple of carbon black hoppers on the local every week.

Gary, no promises, but I am going to try to get a rough date on when the Cities Service plant closed. I suspect it may have shuttered too many years before your modeling period, because they would have definitely been seen in Mojave.

Nice looking cars with some great looking details, so I hope to pick up a couple for the variety. Looking forward to what the next two "rolling stock" announcements are too! Hopefully the 5188s make the transition to N as well.

I gotta say though @scaletrains - the pop up on the website asking me to subscribe to the mailing list every other minute is easily one of the most annoying things on the internet....

Gary, here's a pic with a Cities Service car on the Mojave-Bakersfield transfer job, in 1979 near Tunnel 7: http://www.carrtracks.com/tnl7sp.htm . The UP power was an interesting premonition.

The best info I can find is that the Columbian Carbon plant closed in 1989, possibly under pressure from SCAQMD, so I would extrapolate that the other two in the area shuttered roughly the same time. I don't recall if it was Columbian or Ashland that was the Cities Service partner or subsidiary.
