So I see the larger capacity version states it's a late 70s body style, but what is the smaller one? Not knowing these cars well, one could reason smaller capacity would be an earlier version, but Scale Trains website says nada about its origins, and the paint schemes all look later than the larger version.


Ergo, I am guessing this is a non-plus for me, since I model late 60s - early 70s (and no, I am not changing my era) but it would be nice to know for sure.

Smaller one is a '90s built car.  If you click on the roadname on their site it will tell you what lot the model is supposed to represent.

I think it's been established that they have been seen out west.   They are pretty common in the industrial midwest and east coast.

It's not like they have zero track record.  The pics look good.   And 'proven' companies have their screw-ups, too. 

I think they probably could have picked a more popular car for their first freight car in N.  This one is somewhat niche.

I felt a little guilty reading the e-mail earlier today since I was still on the fence. The 5750 is a couple of years past my modeling era, and as commented previously I have firsthand knowledge of the industry they were used in. I'm trying my best to be disciplined about rolling stock spending, as I have boxes and boxes of cars I need to dispose of because of prior indiscretions, including an embarrassing number of duplicates.

But I also want to support this company's N scale efforts. The extended ordering allows a few more days to get off the fence, I s'pose. I can probably rationalize the car as close enough to the preceding period-accurate car to not get too much heartburn. We'll see.

I'd love to help them on this effort, but this car is useless to me and my layout. Maybe they should have started with the 5188, that one will sell like hot cakes. I plan on buying a dozen of those (if they ever happen).

Did anyone get a good look at the assembly?  Quality of plastics used?

I ask because some of these hi-detail cars are put together with a lot of surface mount, glued parts that are made of a crumbly plastic material. The parts fall off when the car is handled under normal conditions.  If the Scale Trains cars are well-engineered, getting the word out and increasing pre-orders shouldn't be a problem.
