Does the roof come off of a PRB brass passenger car?

Hi all,

I managed to break off the screw (just about flush) while trying to mount a MT coupler to a Pecos River Brass passenger car (10-2 Pullman). From the looks of things, the easiest remedy would be to pull the roof off and drill out the screw from the other side (it wasn't in very far).  Now, getting the floor out is no problem- 4 little screws.  But the inside of the body has a framework that obstructs a clear view of the roof from the inside (similar to how a Kato passenger car is put together).  It appears to have some tabs, but I can't tell if this is a snap fit (like a Walthers plastic car), or should slide one way or the other (like a Kato) or is just soldered in place (in which case I go to plan B).  I don't want to damage the car with experiments.  And I am hoping to avoid having to grind the break flat and having to find a "00-90 sized" center punch (which is plan B).

Any advice very much appreciated.

Unfortunately the roofs are soldered in place.

Thanks Andrew.  Better to find out this way than the hard way.  Worst come to worst, I will drill out a slightly larger hole, plug it, and start over on drilling and tapping.

Yup - that's your best option at this point.  Not too much extra work in the grand look of things.

That roof ain't coming off without one heck of a fight. I desoldered the roof from a PRB mail-baggage and it was a pretty tough job. The roof came off eventually, but is kinda mangled so it ain't going back on without another fight and probably the sacrificing of two goats.

I managed to leave the roof on and get the screw drilled out from underneath.  Hopefully will have everything together properly sometime this evening.
