This may sound like a stupid question but would anyone be so kind to shed some light on what prototype the Walthers 48’ Rib side containers are based upon? I have a ton of un-decorated kits and I wish to paint and decal up a few. I have tried searching the internet but all I come up with is 48’ corrugated and sheet /post containers.

Any help would be much appreciated.

they are roughly based on a Stoughton designed Exterior Rib sheet and post 48 footer.

Example:
http://www.matts-place.com/intermodal/part3/images/csxu48.jpg

Its missing the rub rails and the stiffeners, but its an acceptable stand in.

Chris - try "Exterior Post" in your searches instead of rib side.
Here's a good source though:
http://www.matts-place.com/intermodal/part3/48foot.htm

The Walthers and MTL x-posts are generally Hyundai / Great Dane / Monon builds (and maybe early Stoughtons?)

The key spotting features for me are the nose wall construction and there is only one exterior post on the 4' extension on the end (between the 40' ISO posts and the front/rear of the container.

Great Dane:

Monon:

Hyundai:

The late Stoughtons by difference have a sheet and post style front nose and they have extra posts immediately adjacent the 40' ISO posts. This design carried over into the their 53' containers too.

Off the top of my head, with microscale decals, you can easily do ATSF, EMP, CSX, NACS, SP, Genstar versions for the Walthers and MTL models.

Santa Fe:

EMP:

I haven't done a side-by-side between the Walthers and MTL models yet to see how they vary...I'm just happy they're painting the ribs for us!

Gentlemen, thank you very much for those links. Exactly the information I was looking for. I had skimmed by that site in my original research but I guess I didn’t drill down far enough.  A search for “Exterior Post” really opens up more examples of the container, thanks James.

Well, FYI...
Walthers has done ATSF and Genstar, among others.
MT just did EMP this month and SP last month.  Might need to get 'em quick!

Also I lobbied @Shipsure for NACS and since I also lobbied for SP and EMP, maybe he's listening.   ;)

Side to side they are basically identical except that the MT has rivet detail.  The tops and ends vary a little more.  I'll try to post some pics later when I have more time.

I really wish MTL did a 5 or 10 pack of the EMP containers. They were long overdue.

Walthers has never cared about any kind of accuracy in N scale. They are first and foremorst an HO manufacturer and are just basically throwing N scalers a bone. They're still doing the same containers and schemes they've been putting out for 20 years already.what a freaking joke.  The only difference is the packaging and that the price is 30% higher than it was originally.

Sorry, I thought you meant the 53' EMPs since MTL came out with an EMP 53' recently.

I do think packaging their containers in the same kind of jewel box packaging as their rolling stock is excessive and unnecessary.

Don't want to start a debate with you folks, but I've never had a problem with other containers in simpler packaging come chipped or broken. Rolling stock - of course, your packaging is appropriate - there are rotating parts, detail parts and other auxiliary protruding parts (i.e. truck hitches, brake wheels) that need protecting. But containers? They're just one piece basically.
And where should I keep my jewel boxes for all the containers? A container for a container container? Maybe in that case it's good you don't do multiple container packs :)

Well, some people (especially collectors) do retain the jewel boxes. The added benefit of doing that is that it makes the models slightly more valuable and easier to resell if you decide that you no longer want them.  I do try to retain the original boxes for my RR models (regardless whether it is a boxcar, container, or a trailer).

If you a person who tosses away boxes as soon as you place the model on your layout then I can see how you don't care how the model is packaged.

Remember all the complaining when the Trainworx trucks showed up on a card instead of a jewel box?
I'd rather have a reusable box to place my toys back in when I'm not running them.

they also make festive jello molds too :)   Actually to package them any other way would require the expense of time, sourcing or manufacturing something that is only used for one or a few products.  We turn on a machine, a mold that was made 30 years ago pops out boxes, a vacuum form mold is put in a machine and nests pop out and your off to the races.   Just the economy of time...and I would say most of our customers want to have the same packaging other stuff comes in too.
