It turns out the plug into the back of the control panel was loose.....seems to have been the problem

Turns out that wasn't the problem, the plug was certainly loose, but the problem has reoccurred

I have an NCE Powercab system, and 2 Bachmann sound equipped locos. every now and then the system loses power. loco stops, sound stops, headlight goes out.

Ok, lets go over this again.

When you say "system loses power" how do you know that there is no power at the track?

There is a red LED on the Power Cab circuit board where all the connectors are plugged in.  Is that LED dark or lit when the locos stop and apperar to be dead?

What do you have to do to get the locos moving again?
