I'm working on a few (OK ... too many) small PE design project at the moment.  My hope is these small PE projects will allow me to optimize run costs, so as to reduce COGS / item.  So while finishing others (ex: PE Poultry Car, etc) I'm looking for a few small projects (industrial windows not offered by others, etc) that I can add to an order.

One idea is mode to the MTL Scale Test Car.   The MTL scale test car comes in many roadnames, but I've heard it has been a poor seller.  Which is crazy given there were 10's of thousands of these things, and if you have a yard, you need a scale, and thus a few scale test cars.  I've been picking them up NOL for $10 and they make great fodder for a bash into mine cars and all sorts of stuff.

But as I'm building my scale house (stay tuned), I thought I would try to back date the body type chosen by MTL to an earlier Southwark style, such ATSF 199915 as shown here:

This was the style in use on many class 1 roads (PRR, CN, ATSF, etc) for many decades

My initial PE design add a warning plate, mods for the wheel hubs, actual grab irons, cut levers, manhole covers, correct brake wheel and a tool door.  I also plan to include a drill / glue template and considering working out shims / box to swap the couplers down to z scale (as others have noted, the MTL N scale couplers are oversized , and this discrepancy is very noticeable on such a small car.

PE = photoetched, fret = convenient collection of attached objects, like plastic parts on a sprue.

I might be interested in Jake's etched parts if I can verify whether UP had the particular prototype represented by the MTL car.

I'm still trying to figure out NOL, since in the language of COGS=cost of goods sold (I am not an accountant, but reasonably fluent in the language), NOL= Net operating loss, which is not what I think it means here.  From the context, it seems to mean "on sale".

I can't figure NOL out either, but I do know what OK means!  :facepalm:

They had water cars as well (not to be confused with auxiliary tank cars)... and also ran Navy Helium cars which didn't float...

I don't think that Jake is a spring-chicken. Maybe he is a prolific texter?  :?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the "OL" in "NOL" means "on line" as in "on eBay", etc. Maybe "N" stands for "new"?  Jake only knows.  :|

I'm not necessarily interested in the project mainly because I have too much going on right now.  Priorities.  But I should pick one up   in part because they look like they could be part of a cool scene but also to see what might be seen for making small stuff.  The other one I should pick up is the dual coupler disconnect log trucks.  For narrow gauge guys you should be able to make something cool with one of those. 8)
