Interestingly, the GN started buying Plate C boxcars in the early 60s, while the NP stuck with Plate B until the merger.  I suspect that's part of the reason GN boxcars were, or at least seemed, more common by the 1980s than NP.  The Q also seems to have stuck with Plate B boxcars.

There is no question that this is the case and is well documented that the capacity limitations of the NP's cars quickly took them out of favor with the BN and/or shippers.

ACF built some Plate B 4700 cuft Centerflows for B&O and C&O that addressed both the clearance issues of the Plate C 4650 and smaller capacity of the Plate B 4600.

Yeah, but we're talking about boxcars.

Yeah, but we're talking about boxcars.

Technically speaking, we're supposed to be talking about MTL January 2017 releases, but...

Bryan:  Thank you for the NP comment.  I wasn't sure if they really disappeared faster, or if I saw a skewed sample on my early 80s trips back to Washington.

Bowser still offers the former Delaware Valley 3 bay Centerflow with either 3 or 6 outlets:

I also forgot to mention the roof was a separate part on these cars to cover three variations of roof hatches:

-5 round hatches
-6 round hatches
-trough hatches

On a side note, I bought the December 2016 NP box car (077 00 270).

Is there a way to remove the white "Hide Loading Only" stencil from the side of the car without damaging the brown paint? Any ideas?

I know the procedure for doing this was mentioned a long time ago, but I can't find it.
