I think I read on one of the Groups.IO pages you had those ladders custom etched?

The only etched parts are the end railings.  The photo below shows, from left to right, stock part, fabricated styrene (not much better), the assembled etched parts, and the parts on the fret.  There are two layers to the final part.  They are soldered together.  It took three tries to get an acceptable assembly.  Not shown is an attempt before the etch parts, to fab the railing from brass bar stock.  An unmitigated disaster.  I get points for perseverance no?

Upon further review I need to clarify that statement.  The ladder attached to the long hood is in fact an etched part, just not part of my etch set.  If you've been in N scale for a while you might remember the long gone Railhead line of details parts.  And I'm down to the last few in my stash.  The dimensions are well within the range of ppdltd capabilities, so I think I'll add some to the next etch artwork project.

They did indeed Ed.  IIRC the switchers (EMD and Alco) with Wheeling lineage initially had cages.  The AC&Y purchased some of the S2s, 105 in this photo.  If I had to do more than one I think I'd do an etch sheet.


One more shot of the RS3s.  I added a sky w/ some trees using PE to enhance my meager Brittain Yard backdrop.  You can almost hear them chanting away, as if to say "Come on already.  Let's GO!"

If anyone is interested or curious, the "cages" were installed after a brakeman (I believe) tripped out of the cab door, fell over the handrail and was either seriously injured or killed by the moving locomotive.

Just one difference between railroading then and now. Then they installed a safety device. Today they'd just make a rule banning use of the cab door while in motion and get mad at crews taking too long to get their work done.

On my last visit to the AC&Y, one of the biggest kicks I got was seeing the discarded paper and trash on the yard lead.
