Are these accurate? Says new tooling, was thinking about picking one up but $20 :scared:.

It looks like a clone of the Botchmann plug door car, but with a sliding door.

Yeah, I don't even know where to begin with those things.
I really am having a difficult time understanding Bachmann's pricing strategy these days.
They are really overselling themselves based on a fidelity to accuracy and detail that just isn't there compared to some other manufacturers.

On the Bachmann website store, I found a PS-2 3-bay covered hopper, new to me, with tooling that looks just awful.

That hopper looks like it may have some modest updates on +/- 30 year old tooling.
I don't know what the cost is but based on recent Bachmann trends, I'd guess it's likely in the > $20 range for a car I remember paying $1.99 for at KB Toys.

These are the cars with the garden-shed roof pitch. Yikes! Maybe cars designed to be loaded by coneheads ...

Looks like they added body-mounted couplers that stick out like cushioned coupler pockets.

+1 for the KB Toys reference.  I miss that place, and those prices.

Those old 2 buck cars had paint so thick you could weather them with Floquil straight from the bottle and not dent it.

I know I've said this before...but I don't think we're the audience Bachmann is targeting with most of their rolling stock.  The tooling, the single road number per scheme, the "creatively interpreted" schemes...sigh.  But I got nuthin' on their pricing.  Bachmann seems to have some of the highest markdowns on the street so I'm guess that helps drive these astronomical MSRPs.

Bachmann has raised the bar with some of their more recent releases:

However, both the 50' box and 3 bay PS-2 appear to be based on tooling that has been around for awhile.

While the Bmann 50' Boxcar in this thread is a swing and a miss, a bunch of the recent stuff is decent (as mentioned immediately above):

  • The "Northeast" Caboose
  • The USRA 55 ton Hopper
  • The ACF "10K" Tank car

One good thing is it looks like they are adding body mounted couplers even to the ancient tooling - hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit.

Atlas 3 bay PS-2 with hat ribs would be a good product to re-release in the Trainman line, and it's also compatible with the Trainworx part for the 90T hopper.
