Rapido GMD-1 relaunched

So Rapido has relaunched their popular first offering in N scale, the GMD-1. I have the black Noodle CN 1000's series and till date, no other locomotive, not even other Rapidos have been able to match the slow speed performance of this locomotive. BLW has this on preorder for $205.95. I read somewhere (maybe here are TRW) that the pre-orders are at 400's where they need 750 to start production. I may pick one more up, maybe this time in the Green CN/1954 scheme.

I'm happy to share our numbers on this - we've sold 400 1430-44 series GMD-1s. If we look at the recent run of HO GMD-1s, that is about the same sales as the 1430-44 series in HO. So no complaints from me about the sales figures. Our mistake was thinking we would sell enough for a minimum production run, which is about 1000 pieces. I have no clue what we were thinking... There is no way we could have sold 1000 1430-44 series GMD-1s.

We're hoping by announcing the 1100s and a new batch of green GMD-1s, we will hit that 1000 mark. Even if we don't, we're confident enough to say that production will 100% go ahead after the new order deadline.

We're also open to doing a custom run of red and black CN noodle GMD-1s for a shop if any are interested. Those were our second biggest sellers in the first batch.

Not typically, but i have a picture somewhere of 1000 series units in passenger service...

Now if Rapido would do the 1900 series they were used primarally in passenger

Thank you.  I would love to have the green scheme to pull a small 4 car train I have, but it has to somewhat prototypical.

I doubt many would sell but this was actually my first view of a GMD-1.

I would buy it. If only Manufacturers made reasonably priced shells that could be swapped out. There isn't a lot of apparent prototypical variation in the lower half of the locomotive and at 1:160 sizes, they wouldn't be easily noticeable either. I guess it would cannibalize their volumes though..

Wonder how much work would be needed to make one of these into a NW5

For starters, NW5s used Blomberg trucks, so it probably wouldn't help all that much!..

Here's the only photo I've seen of a ten hundred series unit in passenger service, so while rare its not impossible...

"A trio of GMD-1's led by 1074 haul a train of about 21 old coaches leaving Winnipeg on the double track Redditt Sub.
bound for Grand Beach. In 3.6 miles train will branch north at Beach Jct. onto the Pine Falls Sub. Circa 1961

Looks like a CN-CP pool train, with CNR baggage car and CPR coaches. Cool!
Because why not...

Absolutely. I've seen photos of 1000-series GMD-1s in Quebec with a steam generator and passenger cars behind.

Of course, I just went to look for them and couldn't find them! But I definitely have seen them. They were even in a film. Maybe someone can remember what the movie was.

I would be very interested in seeing that... Not doubting you, (okay maybe a teensy bit  ;)) just would be very interested...

Jason @rapidotrains is there still a possibility of 1900's at some point in the future? or have these been passed over?

I just remembered that the 1000s appeared in the Disney film "Big Red" pulling a passenger train.

I originally saw the info about 1000s on passenger trains in Quebec at Van Horne Hobby in Laval. There was a fellow there who brought in his locomotive assignment book from when he was a hogger in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the 1000s were on a tonne of trains, passenger and freight. Apparently many started work in Montreal before heading west.

They were still there in 1961/62 as the Disney film was shot in Quebec and I am certain Mr. Disney did not ask for 1000-series GMD-1s to be shipped in from Saskatchewan to pull the train...  :D

I'm not sure if I have any photos but I will continue to look.
