What sound decoder to put in a Kato baggage car?

I would like to put a sound decoder in a Kato baggage car. I figure I could use a bigger speaker and keep alive capacitors for continuous sound. What kind of decoder can I use without a motor/

Seriously, you might consider this. No wires, USB recharge.  Load the sounds you want on your phone as a playlist and play what you want.

I was heading down the same path as you with my Polar express train until I discovered the groove cube. Just an idea.

The reason I specified Kato was all of their passenger cars have electrical pick up to power lights etc.
It follows I could install a sound decoder in it as well. Are ther any sound only decoders available that are small enough for N scale?

I would hope so.  I put a decoder in a Kato CZ bagaage car when they first came out 10+ years ago.  IIRC, it was a Soudtraxx decoder.

Has anyone used the MRC Sounder decoder (HO)? There is one for steam and one for diesel. They would probably fit in an empty baggage car.

What about buying a sound equipped athearn reefer and using the sound decoder from it? I think they go for $40. Not sure if the sound program could be modified.

As I understand that is not a DCC decoder - just a standalone sound generator unaware of DCC signal.  It cannot be reprogrammed by the end user.

MRC sound decoders opinion? You get what you paid for (that is a hint).

Couple of problems when using a separate sound decoder. For steam locos there will no be any sort of chuff synchronization.  The other problem is that not having a motor for a load the decoder will be hard to program.

Soundtraxx makes a sound-only decoder but I'm not sure if it has locomotive sounds (diesel or chuff). It does however have lots of other sounds (horns, diesel generator, wheel clicks, flange squeal, etc.).

A problem w/ loco sounds in following rolling stock can be the loco goes by & THEN loco sounds are heard. Maybe you could find a way to have the decoder in the following car & just the speaker in the loco. There are some very small ones available. Also most passenger trains had/have a 2nd loco. Just have that one as a dummy for the decoder & a speaker. Also check out Yahoo Group forums for N scale sound.
