How does one end up having a Probationary status on TRW?
« on: October 18, 2016, 03:46:45 AM »
I think that is the first time I've just seen anybody with that status.  Looking at their posts there doesn't seem to be any controversial or trolling contents.

That would be between management and the individual.

Or Vollmer fat-fingered something on his phone.

I don't even know what we're talking about here.  But yeah, it could be my fat fingers whatever it is.  Can I get specifics so I can fix?

Okay, I found the post and member in question @tom mann and @peteski.  This time I don't think it was me!  I wasn't in that thread at all and haven't seen any of his posts for a long time.

Actually, it doesn't even look like I have permission to grant "probationary" status even if I wanted to let alone by accident!

Ah, that explains it!  This is the first time I have seen this status on TRW and the member in question seems to be in perfectly good standing, and a source of good info (not controversial like me for example).   :D So it was a fat-finger probation. Good to know.

I don't know that we've established that.  It wasn't my fat fingers anyway.

OK, so @Dave Vollmer didn't fat finger it all all, but I don't want to get into specifics as to what the groups mean. Best to just enjoy the forum with all it's quirks.

Not at all, but I am a naturally curious person. Always have been. That is the reason why whenever I get a new model I take it apart to find out what's inside and how it works. You've seen my technical reviews of models where I totally disassemble a model.

I notice things others don't pay much attention to (like the user's status or the weirdness with respect points). I don't go out of my way to look or snoop around for stuff like that -  I simply notice things like that. When I am reading someone's post my brain automatically registers things like the user's status or wacky (to me) votes in that post. I think that this is also the reason why I'm a fairly decent modeler (I pay attention to the details).

When I saw the probationary status of that member and I yet I didn't recall noticing that member in the past as being beligerant or trolling, it piqued my curiosity. So I checked that member's profile and the relatively few posts they made since they joined, and again nothing there appeared to give a reason for probationary status. So I asked here.

But it appears that there is a valid reason for what is going on, and that no more info will be forthcoming. I'm fine with that. But I will be sure to notice if that user's status changes in the future.  ;)

There are two types of groups in an SMF forum . those that are post count enabled, ie .. after a certain amount of posts, you get access to things .. here at RW those would be the crew lounge, trading post, etc ...

The second type of groups in an SMF forum are based on whatever criteria the admin wants it to be .. a long time ago, I had a probationary status that I would put new people in for a time to make sure they were model railroaders . We had a rash of people signing up whose only purpose was to post spam, cause havoc, etc .. after a period of time, I would move the account to normal status. It's not used anymore, but we never deleted it and never cleaned it up.   My fault ..

I don't think you have to worry much unless you descend to Double Secret Probation.
