Weekend Update 9/11/16

No modeling yet, but while at East Tennessee State in Johnson City TN for some business today I was told about their model railroad exhibit.  Apparently they have been tasked with researching and preserving the history of the ET&WNC.  Part of the project is a large, highly accurate HOn3 model of the Tweetsie!  I only had a few minutes before they closed, but did manage to grab a few pic

I've been milling frames and fitting some of my Life Like engines with hardwired decoders.
Here's a DL 109 with a Digitrax DZ126t.

Please document and illustrate the whole process! There's no decent method shown anywhere on the net now. Especially how you rejiggered the original light board, I too want to use it as a stable platform for the new LED.

Well, my modeling has stopped.  In the middle of a major life event.  Glad when it has passed.

But in the meantime, Mr. Ryoichi Fukushima of Japan, sent me some new photos of his Millennial Edition (as I am now calling it) stock Japanese EP-2.
He was excited to add number boards and builder's plates to his model.

I thought these shots were great for sharing.

Is the person you are in contact with from Kumata, or a private modeler? I remember a few years ago when they offered one of those models to me for sale after they sent me their spare N scale parts; I should have bought one! You can definitely see where your hard work and dedication have made your models so much better than the stock models (no offense intended to Kumata!).

Also, I still have all of the documentation they sent to me regarding the spare parts and those models. If you are interested, I can scan it for you and email it to you (possibly for your writeup on the new EP-2 models).

This man with the model above is a private modeler in Japan who bought one of these.  Yes, it is the same series of the loco you were talking about.  But this one this modeler has is of MUCH higher quality than the one they offered you.

The sequence of events just happened to be from a couple of years ago....

1.  I'm writing/researching for my book on Kumata brass.  I was reporting a bit here and there- posting some findings.
2.  I wrote Kumata by email asking for info.  No response.  Felt a bit discouraged.
3.  You read my work, decide to repair one of your Kumata locos.  So about a couple of months after I had contacted Kumata, you emailed them.... and they answered you.
4.  Your experience encouraged me.  So I emailed again and they offered me the same loco they offered you.   I asked a bit more and found out they had that last loco and 10 unassembled kits.   I then bought all they had.

This is below the actual loco they offered both you and me when we contacted them.



If you had bought it, I'm not certain you would have been all that pleased.  While it looks pretty cool from a distance and at first glance, I could make a long list of all the things that were wrong with it.  I think it was un-sold for a reason.  It was a kind of a factory reject or something.

My excitement was more in the kits rather than this one.

And yes, please email me any info you have.  Your info and mine may not be exactly the same.  The modeler from Japan provided me some very helpful info I did not have before.

My long term plan is to one day possibly strip this one of most of its parts and rebuild/kitbash it to the streamlined version.  But I have a LOT to do before I ever get to that point.



And by the way, to all those who expressed concern about my cryptic remark about my life situation, it is not bad- just stressful and time-consuming.  All will be good in October and I can get back to modelling!

I went with the steamship Virginia V up to Port Townsend, WA for the annual wood boat show.



This is the trip back to Seattle.  The engine was doing 150 rpm, and I had to move the oil can with the rotating assembly.  This engine has 70 some odd manual oil points that have to be lubed every thirty minutes.  At 150 rpm, the engine is surrounded by a mist of oil and water.  It's also quite warm from the boiler, around 95 F, and very humid from all the steam.

I also got to see a movie star:


The brig Lady Washington has been in multiple movies, including Star Trek:  Generations and Pirates of the Caribbean.
