The Roco PS3 2-Bay Hopper

Kiz's thread on the L&N reminded me of something I've long wondered about.

How dimensionaly accurate is the Roco (Austria) 36' PS3 2-Bay Open Hopper?

It always seemed a bit tall to me.

I have a handfull I'm planning on foobing up into Conrail stone cars at some point, because they always seemed bigger than normal 50 ton hoppers to me, but my eye might be incorrectly calibrated.

I do have a 1961 Car Builders Cyclopedia and it shows the height dimensions as 10' 8" to the eaves and an extreme height of 11' 11".

I have a Roco L&N car and if we use the eaves, the height is about 12 1/2 scale feet. i thought it would be worse but I'm at my desk and lighting is bad.

Yeah, it's too tall.  I started sanding one down to pit a new lip at the top, but ultimately gave up because the ends are so compromised for the truck mounted couplers.

In thinking about it, there may be an issue with the bays as well hanging too low if you try and lower the car, but I'd have to double check that.

Have some respect points my man!

Thanks for doing the measuring.

I'm glad my "eye" was about right.

I thought about that once too - but ended up picking up Atlas PS-2's to cut the roof partially off.

I wish Atlas would do the modified PS-2 ballast car,  they were pretty common.

That would be awesome. Look at all the Conrail paint schemes, alone.

I've made a few of these using both Karo and Atlas hoppers since GSMR bought four. They turned out pretty nice and we're not too difficult. I'll get some pictures to post later this evening.

I had bought a cast conversion kit from Mocalova Models, which is out of business now. I ended up getting some styrene I-beam and trimmed them to match. There are some options on shape ways, but I am not familiar with them.
