@jagged ben  - have you come across any photos of F85Bs in JTTX service after they were bumped from TOFC use? That I'd love to see!

Being more focused on TOFC service itself, I have not really looked for that.

I didn't realize that the word "intermodal" had been invented in the early 70s.  Everyone around the BN in Pasco still called it "piggyback", and the few containers were simply "containers on a flatcar".

But if the Soo trailers are from 1972, I'll have to buy one.

I don't need the Kroger, as I'm sure they didn't have any stores in Montana, Idaho, Washington, or Oregon in 1974.

I haven't really think about it, but when I looked it up http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/intermodal shows the first use in 1963.

Got that right. They didn't start buying some of the smaller western chains until the 90's. Now if they did Safeway or IGA.............

So I was like, eh, I model western roads, I don't recall ever seeing any of these schemes in my photos, don't think I'll be ordering any from this batch, but let me check the photos one more time...

Maybe we can get Pat to make an Albertsons trailer.   :D

I could use a few in this paint scheme:  http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/dfaust/apr2003/box01/file0016.html

Peteski:  I'm sure the word "intermodal" was around before the railroads started using it, because it's still used in other contexts.  But of the Soo trailers date from the early 70s the Northwest must have been late in adopting it for a railroad term.  That wouldn't be surprising, even railroads have regional or corporate dialects!

Carter:  An Albertsons trailer I would buy.  I don't have room for one on my layout, but they were in  the area, and a trailer wouldn't be out of place.  I never saw one on a flatcar, but as scenery it would be welcome.

I could really use some in early Safeway schemes.

60s era IGA would be great! Did Piggly Wiggly do TOFC?

Whether they did TOFC or not probably doesn't matter, if there's a market for them.  Almost any North American railroad from the 1950s on can use a few non-railroad related semis, simply for scenery.

Supermarket trailers would be common at food distribution warehouses, which would also be logical places for reefers, insulated boxcars, and probably a few uninsulated ones as well.  There are plenty of those available now, and since model citizens need model food, they could provide an industry for any well populated layout.

The trailers alone could be found in any town big enough to have a supermarket, modeled or not.

I'd like to see an old A&P supermarket trailer here's one that would fit the CMW trailer but I'm sure they had ones that would fit the Trainworx trailers. https://www.google.com/search?q=a%26p+trailer&biw=598&bih=280&prmd=nvsi&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHha7MtYHMAhVK4CYKHfrhAeQQ_AUICSgE#tbm=isch&q=a%26p+truck+trailer&imgrc=U9ISCPprraoXGM%3A

I have many of these trailers because they fit my era and plan on getting the Kroger trailers. I went to work for them in St. Louis in 1969 right out of college and these were very common.
