Highest Ranked DCC
« on: March 29, 2016, 02:32:09 PM »

There is a brand new posting on Facebook for NCE visiting Trainworld for a day.  A graphic appears touting NCE as the highest ranked DCC system.  This is not the first time I have searched the internet to find where this ranking comes from.  I realize that Google basically shows me what it wants me to see, but I do not know whether there is an actual poll of the model railroad electronics industry or of individual users or what.  Does anyone know how NCE can make such a claim?  I don't want this question to turn into a battle over your own preferences, that's like Android over iPhone or Mac over Microsoft.

Interesting...
From anectodal evidence around me I'm fairly certain that Digitrax is the most commonly used DCC system.  Personally I don't like Digitrax (I really dislike its user interface and poorly written manuals).  I own NCE and think it is much easier to use.

But I'm not sure what is this "highest ranking" thing.  Why did you search using that term?  Highest ranking in what?  Functionality, number of features, ease of use, documentation?  While I'm glad to see NCE ranked at the top, this smells of marketing jargon to me.

Sure, they just left out the qualifier...

A simple case of puffery. There's a limit to what you're allowed to state at the risk of false advertisement.  But exaggerations like "World's Greatest" or "The Best" that are not really quantifiable or able to be proven false using scientific methods are generally non-actionable puffery.  In other words, an advertiser can get away with statements that sound great but really mean nothing, e.g., "New and Improved."

I haven't seen the ad, but "Highest Ranking DCC" system is vague.  Highest rank of what?  Modelers'  preference?  Most sales?  Most defects?

Oops, sorry, not intentional.

No doubt there are other ethnic references from my childhood I should check up on.

Oh, I don't mind Ed, and Jason knows.  He is doing it tongue-in-cheek (I hope) I've been called worse.  :D  Plus I don't go for the political correctness (touchy-feely, let's not offend anyone) thing.  If that was too offensive, Jason can call me Pollock - I'll know what he really means.  ;)

But NCE does rule in my world - however if you look at my earlier post, I'm leery of that statement myself.

That's funny Gary - you moved this thread just as I was posting my previous commend. I was just goign to make a suggestion that this thread does not belong in the N/Z section, but I think it really belongs in the Crew Lounge.  We are discussing marketing tactics, not merits of a DCC system.

Thanks, Pete.  FWIW, I knew you've used that term here, so I didn't even think twice.  Still my bad.

No worries Jason, I'm sure it was nothing intentional.... just always good to know what words can mean.

Highest ranked in the industry?  In what, and by whom?  Unless the video gives some specifics, this is just silly marketing talk.  Just like the "all natural" labels you see on many food items.  Isn't everything "natural".

I get a big kick from the often-used line, Made from all natural ingredients.  Not much s made from ingredients not found in nature.  Man-made elements seem to have a rather short half-life.
