Second question, could the Amfleet cars be pulled by the SDP40F since they were HEP and the  SDP40F wasn't?

If not, I need to wait for Phase III Amfleets or Phase II F40PH's.

Jason

Yep, you're just going to need a HEP car, which could have been rebuilt from an old baggage car or even an E unit!

Hope this helps,

One question though, is what Kato doing really Phase I paint?  I thought phase I had the arrows at both ends like this:

I think I want what they show on the artwork with the single arrow, so I'm just curious as to the naming.

Anyone?

Jason

Jason,
In looking through pictures on RailPictures.Net, it looks like the Heritage equipment mostly had the arrows at both ends, but for the most part, the Amfleet cars had a single arrow, like the Kato artwork shows.  An example here:

Yummy.

It's funny, I was wondering why I kept seeing E8/9Bs tucked behind the SDPs on trains. I didn't realize they had turned them into HEP generator cars. Neat!

I wonder if Kato will do one. I wouldn't be entirely unsurprised if they did, honestly. They have most of the parts already.

Well I guess I never noticed that two different schemes are called "Phase I".   In my head, it's always been the double arrows.

To model the Arrowhead I would need a F40PH in phase II paint or the Amfleet I cars in phase III paint to do the later North Star.  I asked Kato which may come first, we'll see if something slips out.   :)

As Brian pointed out, it seems as if the Amfleet cars mostly had a single arrow, but, if you look close in the link that he posted, there's one right there, i.e., the third car, that has two blunt arrows.  And so . . . Ed's Law.

I think that the the earliest paint scheme for those was Phase II.

The objective would be to get something with HEP to operate with an Amfleet I in Phase I paint rather than a matching paint scheme.

I saw that, too.  It could be that the first one is out of service and is just being transferred to ensure service where they might be short on cars.

Amfleet were and still are HEP, so they would rarely mix with other phase 1 cars.

George

Ok  I see now.  One of the last trains out of Coluumbus' Amshack station in 1979 had an E8 leading an F40 and Amfleet cars with what look to be heritage baggage style cars.  I am guessing it was there to supply power for the consist then.  As well as lending the ole E8 a hand in pulling everything.  This date is later than what I'm modeling I just remember seeing this consist since the Amfleet cars were in the consist.  I'll be needing more inherited eqiupment in phase 1 paint, with a bit of phase II paint here and there possibly,  since I'm stuck in the mid 70's.  thanks

I've seen #30 and #31 with E8B's(trailing of course), as well as E8A's were mixed with the SDP40F's as well.  My father worked near Columbus Union Station before we moved out of town in 1975.  But that was using inherited equipment behind.

:|      Everyone forgets that the last batch of SDP's were delivered if I recall correctly with HEP and the plan was to convert the Steam Generator equipped units to HEP, but their banishment and early retirement stopped this, although some components were reused on early F40's . Do you have a source for this?  I can find that the SDP40F's were equipped with HEP cables for later conversion, but can't find anything that says any ever had HEP installed.

Already did some checking on this.  Can't find any reference where they came with HEP.  Yes, they were going to install it in them but with the derailment problems and other new units they never did.

According to this:

http://utahrails.net/pass/amtrak-hep-locos.php

As the HEP-equipped Superliner cars entered service beginning in February 1979 (long distance service began in October 1979), the railroad found that the pass-through cabling was too small. In 1980, as part of a heavy overhaul, 21 of the 600-class locomotives received heavier HEP cabling. These 21 locomotives were the only SDP40Fs to receive Amtrak's Phase III paint scheme.

If I understand it correctly, this was just HEP pass through cabling.
