Bonehead Kiz Strikes Again...

Aw man, I ordered a Kato NW2 switcher because it's DCC ready. Except I didn't read the whole description at Brooklyn Locomotive Works and wound up ordering the only roadname they had that isn't DCC ready. Rats.

Gotta return it for a different engine.

Hmm... I have to put up
with Kiz's mistakes all
the time...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Wait, what? Aren't they all the same mechanism?

According to BLW, the CB&Q isn't but Kato's site doesn't say that,

Pretty sure they're all the same mech and all DCC-ready like all recent Kato releases.

Well that's a relief! Thanks for the encouragement.

Hmm... woo hoo, Kiz saves
$6.80 on postage. Now
maybe he can buy me
some termites...

Out of curiosity, I went to Kato's webpage and found this:

http://www.katousa.com/N/NW2/

It says "All new motor and mechanism design
Locomotives is DCC friendly, able to take drop in decoders..."

That made me wonder, did Kato just recently come out with an all new motor and mechanism design, meaning there was an older non dcc friendly design?

The doubt is back... sigh. Wait! I know, I'll take the shell off and look at the guts...

Okay, while I had the shell off, a brass contact strip fell out, and the nose headlight popped off. Also, I think something like a screw fell out of the engine, but I don't see anything missing. I checked all over the floor, but no luck. Well, there was some luck (that's when I found the brass contact strip just lying there). Oh, and the trucks popped loose from the frame... just held on by those doohickey narrow rod-like things. Whatever.

I got everything (?) back together finally, thinking this is all gonna happen again when I strip the paint off the shell later this year.

Dee, fix me a banana daiquiri!!!

Hmm... it'll cost you
$6.80...

Kiz,
you aren't having much lick with your hobby lately.   :( Maybe you should get Md. Dee to work on your N scale locomotives.  Apes are very proficient with tools.

I also did not realize that there were different versions of the NW2 mechanism. These locos seemed to fly under the radar. Nobody really seems to have talked about them (other than the infamous slipping gear).  Or at least I didn't notice much fanfare about them.

I'm no Kato expert, but check out Spookshow's write up:

http://www.spookshow.net/katonw2.html

Seeing as how the model was introduced in 2007 as DCC drop-in ready, I'm guessing there never was a non-DCC ready version.

Well, if Spookshow says it's DCC ready, that's good enough for me. I'm just hoping I didn't mortally wound my NW2 when I took the shell off. It'll probably explode when I finally apply power to it... shrapnel flying everywhere, blood... oh, the horror.

Hmm... I'll be down in
my fallout shelter...

Yep, based upon Spookshow's site, it sounds like there was a change, but that only meant that you didn't get DCC Equipped (the newest mechanism) and got DCC Ready (what you wanted).

Good luck putting it back together.

I bought mine in 2007 and dropped in my decoder.

I put decoders in both of my CB&Q NW 2's with no problems at all.  Nothing coming apart or falling off.  The best part is they run like champs!

I drop my decoders all the time, but they never land in the right place on the mechanism.

The only un-fun thing about installing DCC in the first-run NW2s is that you have to save the fancy motor tabs from the Kato light-board. But it's not really that hard. All I used to install the decoder in my NW2 was my Swiss Army Knife.
