I'm not sure the FCC would be stalking model manufacturers, considering the FCC can't police historical presentation.  But to minimize risk and maximize consumer pleasure, the manufacturer could always include signage or offer it via download from the manufacturer's web site, to be applied by the purchaser.  This route would be value added too, allowing one model with graphical variety possibilities.

@CBQ Fan In your Double-Mint gum comment, are you referring to the ads on the Railway Express Agency trucks/trailers? The real Railway Express Agency  carried advertising placards, so those are most likely prototypical. However, many of the ads were for Camel cigarettes and I'm not sure whether CMW would want to or be allowed to use them today.

I collected signs of my era that had a long rectangular shape, print them out in color, sized to fit on the side of the REA truck. There was some guy online who made up period signs or had copies of old ads and he posted clean versions for free, forgot who that was. Here's a sample:



I downloaded a lot of ads when I found this site, but never bookmarked it. If you set your printer resolution high the ads come out pretty decent, actually readable, and fit on the  side of the trucks. My REA is a Sylvan Models.

I must be in the Minority, because I feel the CMW cars and pickups look good enough for scenery items for the era of my layout.





Yes, under close magnification, the windows are a little funky, but under normal viewing conditions they look just fine. I'm more interested in operating my layout, than photographing it.

The Oxford diecast models would never work for me,
   First reason they are British Outline meaning they are 1:148 not 1:160
  Secondly they are British prototypes, does not fit well with a 1950's to 1960 era USA layout.

For me nothing destroys a scene faster than seeing a Western Maryland 2-8-0 steaming over a railroad crossing with one of these sitting at the crossing


That is a European truck, which were pretty much non existent in the USA until the mid 1980's.  But again, we are all different, some might not mind having their USA themed layouts populated with European models, but I'm not one of those people. I don't want those cheap plastic automobiles that companies like Lima use to offer, but I am interested in populating my layout with Ford's, Chevy's, Buick's, Studebaker's, Mack's, Peterbilt's, Kenworth's, etc.  Just my two cents and your mileage may vary

I guess that I treat each item as a standalone model, which is a damn good reason I don't (and probably never will) have my own layout.    But I'm in a very high demand by all my friends who do own layouts.

Gosh, you're such a sweet guy!     I don't think so because I just started using that photo last week.  But it might be helpful from now on. 

BTW, this is what happens when a model RR forum provides a set of default avatars totally unrelated to the forum's subject and doesn't have an option ot upload a custom avatar.  I had one linked externally but it disappeared and I didn't feel like finding another outside one.  I just picked something pretty on this forum.
