Shelf layout as baggage

First off, the luggage compartment is pressurized like the rest of the plane. Temperatures will be a little colder but I have never ever run into Isis carrying my modeling supplies on the plane and I fly quite a bit for BNSF. I think you need to make a lightweight package with your layout sections all packed together in a crate style package. The biggest issue will be the handling of it at terminals. If your going to be there for a while, I'd actually try to build most of it there and shop your supplies die to rough handling on the journey. Maybe lay the track and basic scenery but leave buildings in kit form until you get there.

This would solve a lot of weight/ruggedness issues.

Problem with building a crate to transport it is that it just weighs too much. Its not our only luggage and it has to be able to be moved along with our other baggage through Ohaire, Narita, Suvarnabhumi and into Hat Yai, Thailand. A big heavy wooden crate just isn't going to work. I have a strict limit of 25 pounds for the entire project.

I'm confoosed ... you're leaving permanently for Thailand? I was reading your other layout thread, that's abandoned? well at least finishing the room for the layout now means you have a nice finished basement as a selling point.

Two houses... live in the US, but we take long vacations in Thailand where Joy is originally from. Long story short, we were given her mom's land and are building a (small) house there. Joy's mom will live in an apartment on the first floor while we have a summer residence on the second.

The floor plan of this house is tiny as it is in a very urban area. I sketched some ideas, sent it on to an architect there and he finalized the plans. I'll post them later. Total living area for the second floor is 650-750 square feet, almost the same size as my layout room back home.

Needless to say, any layout in Thailand would need to be very small.

On a personal note, being over there I would love to spend all my time outside and enjoying what the country has to offer. I would not care about the size of the residence. About the layout, what if you build it out of normal materials then crate it normally and ship it via air freight?

have you seen what MC fujiwara is making.  check out his engineering thread.  the modules can stack on each other and you could make a very nice compact switching layout.  He is storing them in an IKEA shelve unit.   He also has a very sweet portable foldable module that he takes to shows and events that he carries in a shoulder bag.  Might be what your looking for.  Be like an extra suitcase to take at most.
