@jdcolombo Thank you! All of the credit goes to @nscaler711 , his idea, I just executed it.

BTW, if anyone tries this, start your cutting of the housing about 2mm from the speaker end. It is safe from the wires and batteries. Use light cuts with an exacto, the plastic is fairly soft.  Once you break through in one spot, scribe deeply thru the rest of the case, and twist a screwdriver to split the housing the rest of the way. You will then have to cut away the rest of the housing to get the remaining guts out.  I used my Xurons to chunk it away.

But John, did you by chance snap pics of the front and back of the board?  From the one side shown, it seems there is much wasted real estate on the original board.  I'd be interested in a similar solution, but for my application would need a smaller PCB.  It would seem a designed board could fit flat under the roof?  Add a  pair of latching reed switches for on/off and volume, and one would never need to reopen the shell.

Thanks Jake!  Did John post that link earlier (and I just missed it)?
While the component layout seems a bit sloppy, one large "wasted" area looks like a Bluetooth antenna to me.  Not much you could do about that, unless you somehow move it off-board.

@peteski , @SandyEggoJake , here are some better pics. Hopefully they will show the board better.  There is just no way to remove anything from the board around the edges to make it smaller, which is why I mounted it vertically inside. As you see, it is proud of the shell, but still fits inside the roof cavity.
