I'm looking to do a CN SGC and looking for a suggestion where to start. I'm thinking of starting with a MTL 40' box car. Any thoughts and suggestions would be great.

Depending on what series you want to build I would concur and use a 40' car - I might use a MT car as it would be easier to fill the door as opposed to shearing off the moulded on door of an Atlas car. You need very fine screen for a SGC and louvers. Archer makes louver decals that would be great. You can make port hole frames with brass tube. There are lots of great pictures here:

Good luck!
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Respect to our past friend Puddington.

Nick did you ever complete your steam generator car?

Hi Dave, don't know about Nick's car, but I built one a while back from an old resin kit apparently made in Ottawa. It was the later GMD style SGU and I traded it for an earlier style SGU kitbashed by @craigolio1, out of intermountain boxcars I believe. See the thread below.

Kind regards,

Fredrick, Thanks for the info and the link. A well done model. My scratch building skills are nil apart from adding some decals.
Maybe Rapido Trains will do the steam gen in N as they did in HO. Even a passive car is fine. One can hope. Look we got the Canadian LRC and F40PH in N  :D
Getting Eric Gagnon's books on VIA for help. I will see if I can work around the HEP problem depending on when cars were converted. Trying to stay circa 1991 .

I made two steam generator cars from Intermountain 40ft AAR box cars. The kitbash required two box cars, new roof, new ends, and MT BX express trucks.

One was the power car for my Pacific Starlight Dinner Train.

The other I did in 1954 CN for Fredrick.

You say your kitbashing skills are nil, however this one wasn’t that bad. PM me if you want some assistance.

Craig.
