Interesting, thanks for the detail.  Ships are obviously different from moorings.  Mind you, I don't know any ships in 2+ km of water but I know many moorings in that kind of depth.

Since you ask.  To lie flat on the bottom and not to become fouled, buried or otherwise stuck on the bottom.  If you look at an anchor on a larger ship you will see it has moving parts.

Then why do anchors have the . . . anchor shape?  Their shape sure looks like it is meant to dig into, or snag onto something on the bottom

Here's a modern navy stockless anchor.  You can see how the blades make the flukes pivot to dig in.



Nearly all achors are designed to somehow dig into the bottom.

I would guess that the gold paint doesn't add significant weight: now, a gold anchor would be an entirely different matter.

Cool , I didn't know that . I knew the "E" and hash marks stood for excellence in war games , by winning the best in its class . But to the hash marks I have a question ? Is it only for consecutive year wins , or do the wins carry if there was a gap in years ?

Battle "E"'s won since commissioning.  S's for safety awards, wrench's (for aviation squadrons) for maintenance awards

Latest progress: the topside tank structure for the 5 LNG compartments. The sections are spaced 100 mm apart. There is an N scale boxcar perched on the structure for scale.
