Came across these on Youtube yesterday, and immediately thought of @davefoxx

Here's the playlist, because the forum is messing with it:

It was my pleasure. I was personally excited to find some video from 11/85. As I'm sure you know, it's surprisingly tough to find mid-80s reference stuff, because it seems like many railfans took a break from 1980-1990.

Yeah, I agree.  I've scoured the interwebs for reference purposes, too.  When I wanted to model an early double stack train and I found some of those Deluxe Innovations Twin Stacks, I couldn't believe my luck when I discovered this video (jump to 1:33 and wait for the coal train to get out of the way):

. . . and there they are, Sealand Twin Stacks with NYSW markings, just as DI released.  Oh, and plenty of information regarding appropriate containers and lettering in 1986.

... it seems like many railfans took a break from 1980-1990.

Interesting observation. I know I did, and many of my railfan friends also scaled back their activity. There was basically a mass depression in the fan community brought on by mergers and overall industry reshuffling due to Staggers. The '80s were also the core of what I call "The Great Dismantlement", when second-tier mainlines were ripped-up in multi-hundred-mile chunks. There suddenly wasn't nearly as much to 'fan, and it took us a while to readjust to the "new normal". I still get twinges of mourning whenever we drive over a bump in the road that I know to be a bit of RR that vanished in the '80s.  :(

Yep. I think that's a lot of what drove it.

It's interesting, too, because that's somewhat why I like the era. It's when railroads really got their ***** together after a couple of decades of floundering. But, that floundering was definitely a lot of fun to observe. It's the reason I keep adding black diesels with worms to my roster, and why I LOVE the stuff from here: http://johnpmedia.com/

Missed me at Howell by a couple of years.  First job out of school and a year into CSX when I landed in Evansville in 87.  Used to stop and watch them load trailers onto flat cars on Saturday mornings while out riding the bike.  My 1st taste of rail fanning and sure wish I'd had thought to buy a camera.  But then again I rail fan these days without a camera so nothing has changed much but my hairline.

I gotta say that Geep in @Ed Kapuscinski 's first video was already looking worn out.
