ALPS printer

My DELL computer with docking station has died and I need
to know if a Parallel to USB cable will work connecting my Alps MD-5000
to my new HP computer. Or should I find an old Dell and use that.

Yes, no and maybe.  If you are planning on running Win98SE and the Alps-branded parallel/usb cable (and driver version 6.40) then yes, it is fully supported.  Anything else (other versions of OS, other brands of cable, other versions of the driver) then things get a bit more problematic.  Then the answer will be "possibly yes with full functionality" or "possibly yes with bidirectional communication disabled", or just "no".  I highly recommend that you join the Yahoo Alps group - we have a whole folder in the Files section on how to try to get the Alps to work with USB adapter.

But by far, the easiest and most reliable way to use the Alps printer is using the LPT port.

Well I ordered a USB cable to see if it works OK. It was less than 5 euro including post.
If not will have to find an older computer with the correct port.

Will join the Yahoo group.
