Gondola Steel Coil Hoods

I was surprised when I went to find some gondola steel coil hoods .... I couldn't find hardly anything. I found one style on shapeways.  This seems like an easy item to produce, perhaps niche for some company. If there are any more out there please advise  :)

Yes, Walthers used to make them...which means you can't get them anymore.

Red Caboose (now part of Intermountain) had them, but the most recent run were due out in 2013 (and they're still not out)

Spookshow also shows Atlas making them not that long ago, but I don't recall seeing them (of course they are way outside of my era). Should be out before the end of this year

No, I actually meant hoods that go over a regular 50' gondola...

There's the Micro Trains version that's been out for many years now.  You can buy the hoods separately too.

I think the Micro-Trains covers are too low for steel coils. I think this is more what unittraincoal had in mind:

Hmm... I have a bunch
of Micro-Trains gondola
covers (free!). PM Kiz if
you're interested...

Low covers were certainly used for coil steel.

Glad micro trains makes one version. I was thinking more the round and square types..... seems they would be fairly easy to produce.

I suppose for someone to make covers like that you need the right gons to put them under, and very few gons have been made in N (compared with other car types.)  I suppose the closest one is the Trainworx car.

Some of the TWX gondola road names that have been released were covered gondolas.  ;)

The MicroTrains 15-panel gon, the newer model, is quite close to cars the GN used in steel coil service, except for being a foot or so too short.  It makes a nice covered gon, and they sold it that way in GN paint.  But, of course, that's not the style you're looking for.

I emailed Pat at Trainworx about doing covers for his gons, and his reason for not making them was that nearly every road's were unique.  He would just about have to tool a new hood for every covered gon he made, which would be VERY expensive.

This seems to be one product that is ideal for 3D printing, as there isn't enough demand for a particular prototype to make it profitable to mass produce.

I think this is a good niche for a Shapeways product, given the variety of different prototype hood styles and model gons available.

I think this is a good niche for a Shapeways product, given the variety of different prototype hood styles and model gons available.

After trying to modify a couple MTL hoods to fit the TX cars without much happiness, I started designing one for shapeways.  There are a couple issues to contend with.  First are any walkways and hands rails.  They really need to be etched (or hand fabricated).  And if your going to do that, you may as well etch the little pedestals for stacking the hoods.  The bigger issue however is the thickness of the 3D print and how if effects fitting the hood onto the car.  There's no real way to mimic sheet metal thickness with 3D printing.  Ideally the hood would just slip over the top of the gon, but that would result in a huge overhang.  One solution could be to print to print it with the expectation of sanding it down.  Another solution would be to sand the top of the car down so the hood could fit low enough.  And yet another solution could be to just use the top of the gon as the part of the hood that supposed to fit over.  This would generally require repainting the top of the gon a silver of white to match the hood.

I'm open to more ideas if people have them.

Will these have body mounted couplers, @Atlas Paul ?
