Although it was only about an hour drive to Manassas, I just didn't want to put up with what I call the amature railfans.  Plenty pnotos and videos on Facebook posted by folks I know

I was in Rectortown, VA on Saturday. An excellent spot and very few people there compared to what I imagine was chaos elsewhere. Maybe about 12-15 people there.
Some really cool old buildings and the remnants of a spur that was for one of the buildings.

A couple fellas that were there later on in the day (when 611 was coming back) had been there 20 years ago for the same reason, except back then it had been pouring rain and 611 stalled and had to be hand-sanded around the tight curve there.

These are two of the many pictures I took on Saturday. One photo for each direction we caught it in. As @VonRyan stated, it was not too bad where we were camped out (as far as rail fans went). The locals and other rail fans were quite friendly and very respectful to each other in regards to photography etiquette.

Got a few pics. First was in the morning on Saturday in Haymarket.



Then on the return trip, caught it several times at different locations. First was just before Manassas depot. (611 had to wait for a late Amtrak train, yet another railfanning bonus from the day).





Plenty of nice varnish on this trip.







Caught it again on the bridge over Route 234 while we were heading over to catch it from the other side of the station.



And finally from the other side of the station.



Overall it was a good time. Hadn't seen 611 since the 25th anniversary of steam excursions in Chattanooga back in 1991 so this was awesome. And my kids all loved it, too. Bonus was the Manassas Heritage Railway Festival happening the same day, so had a good time checking out the modular layouts and listening to some good bluegrass music. More pics from the day here.

Three things about that video.

1) Notice no diesel assist. I wasn't expecting 611 alone, so that totally rocked!

2) See how the camera shook when 611 went past? I was using a heavy, stable tripod for that shot. The ground really shook as it rammed on past the crossing.

3) And they didn't baby it at all. Was great to see that train fly through like it was the 1950s or something. :)
