Bachmann doesn't follow the normal pattern regarding choice of models to produce. More often than not, the manufacturers don't overlap models within the same general time period. Releasing an updated model of a prototype when the original model was first released years prior shouldn't be included in the equation.

So, it is ok for multiple model companies making the same model as long as the new model is perceived as being better? So Arnold GG1 sucked, Kato was really good and now Bachmann is the tops? I haven't seen Bachmann model yet but I doubt it will be better than Kato's. So it has a sound decoder - so what? Mechanically I doubt it will be superior to Kato. I don't buy into your train of thought. How about the MT ans IM FT units? Is one better than the other? And I'm not a fan of factory-applied separate grab irons, etc. as they are usually oversize and glue stains are often visible on the models.
When at any point did I state that, either in this thread or in any other? The Arnold G didn't suck, it was good for it's time. But it pre-dated the Kato model by 40 years, so you can't hold that as an example of two companies stepping on each other. Bachmann, as I stated, marches to its own drummer — the advantage of owning its own production facilities I suppose. And yes, there have been examples of two companies inadvertently working on and releasing models of the same prototypes simultaneously, including the IM/MTL FTs and the MTL/Athearn SP bay window. The point is, companies don't purposely start designing projects of prototypes where another manufacturer recently has released a model of that prototype, as it's not prudent if they want to recoup their investment. Other examples of "duplicated" models that were released decades after their predecessors besides the Kato GG1 include the MTL heavyweights (supplanting RivaRossi models), Athearn/MDC 50' PS-1 and Atlas 40' PS-1 (MTL), MTL/Athearn SP Caboose (RivaRossi/Atlas), Athearn Challenger (Con-Cor), Athearn Airslides (Atlas), Athearn PS2 3-bay hopper (Atlas), Atlas USRA wood boxcars (MTL), Kato PA (Con-Cor), Kato RDCs (Con-Cor), Kato E8 (Atlas), Kato SD45 (Atlas), Life-Like FA (Atlas), Atlas RSD4/5 (old Atlas), Bachmann 10k tank (MTL), Bachmann NE caboose (Life-Like), ESM X58 (MRC), FVM FMC modern boxcars (MTL), Atlas 89' TOFC (MTL), Atlas GP38-2 (Kato), Kato Mikado (RivaRossi/Atlas), MTL ribbed mechanical reefer (Atlas), BLI quad hopper (Model Power). I don't recall any backlash when all of those updated models hit the scene. And there are plenty more examples on top of those.
You are absolutely correct. Also thanks for adding a pretty complete list of models which have been already issued in duplicate in N scale. And I didn't say that you stated that Arnold GG1 sucked. It was me saying that.Playing a devil's advocate here, I would actually like to see some model duplication. I think that N scale market became large enough for this to work (especially with today's manufacturers limited-runs mentality). Some healthy competition would be beneficial for the modelers.
The dupes list was just off the top of my head.
And hey. While BLI's M1 is now on for a February release, Bowser will be releasing their H21 and GLa hoppers next month. After all, what good is a Pennsy freight engine without some hoppers to go along with it?
Bryan, I don't really want to go down this road... I don't think we're throwing tantrums. We're just upset that this one model has been all but held hostage for well more than a decade, and that every additional delay makes it seem all the more fleeting. We absolutely have that right, as would you if a key model you need badly had been strung along for just as long. That Pennsy is well-represented already has little to do with the comedy of errors that has been this one, single, solitary product's life.At this point I half expect the container to wash off the ship!
