How Many Pullman Sleepers?

Let's say there is a train, The City of New Orleans, running between Chicago and New Orleans. How many sleepers would it have?
I'd be interested in finding out the number of sleepers on other long distance passenger trains too, so chime in.

The answer is going to depend on a lot of things including:
  • Year
  • Time of year
  • Railroad
  • Class of service of the train (all Pullman or mixed)
  • Destinations served
  • Traffic between stations
  • Special circumstances dictating more/fewer cars

The answer could be anything from the 18-car all-Pullman flagships of the late '40's to the two sleepers on the modern Amtrak California Zephyr.

Ah, so many variables. I decided to do a little Google search for City of New Orleans, and found out it ran during daylight hours and was all coach. I also found out the IC Panama Limited was all Pullman.

Was just going to mention the City of New Orleans was all coach. You should try to get a copy of The Official Guode.  Issue in various years.  I have one from March 1957.   Lists all pasenger trains and the type of cars they carried.

Ah - I thought it was a trick question!

The correct answer is "it depends".  For example, the Panama picked up and dropped off Pullmans (and other cars) along the way.
You can find sample historical consists on the web if you rummage around.   Here's one site:  http://www.chicagorailfan.com/streaml.html.
You can see there that the 1950s-era Panama had about 9 or 10 Pullmans, but the (barely) original 1942 streamliner had only 6 or 7.
