Atlas S2

Looking at the pre-production photos, It looks like the radiator is a plastic add on to the metal shell.  It shouldn't be too hard to pop it off and either cut it down or cast/RP a replacement. (Which is probably what Atlas plans to do in the future?)

I hope they do S1/3/4s. I could use them all.

   to be accurate with an S-1 or S-3 the hood would be shorter,as
   would the underframe.
  maybe that doesn't matter in N,but in HO put the Proto S-1/3
  next to the Atlas S-2 and there is a length difference.
     the S-1 frame could then be a base for the S-5/6 and T-6
  which are also slightly shorter than the S-2/4 frames.

Even if that job would also entail hoards of grumpy modelers bitching you out, and you had to deal with all the problems related to dealing with manufacturing products in China?

Are you saying that analog and DCC sound units share the same mechanism/frame and the analog one is actually slightly lighter since it has no decoder and the speaker cavity is left hollow?

I had presumed - perhaps incorrectly - that the sound-equipped unit would be lighter as the speaker ("which weighs next to nothing") occupies space that would be filled with steel on the "silent" units...heavier unit = more pulling power.  So sound-equipped <= pulling power than silent one.

The reason for my interest is today I have 3 LL SW1200's as yard switchers  and they have performed very very well. I hope to replace them with the sound-equipped Atlas Alcos which would be prototypical for my yard.  This is contingent on the Alcos being able to pull no less than the LL units.  An added role will be as a branch line switcher but then they need to handle 15 cars on 1% grades...that would be a bonus. The LL units cannot do this today.
