Kato UP Excursion Set Packaging

We received Robyn's car set this morning. I noticed the foam insert was cut (but not removed) to hold the water bottles. My guess is Kato originally planned to include the tenders as part of the car set, and tooled the insert this way. Selling them separately may have been a later plan.

Good idea. I would have been unhappy if I wanted just the tenders for a 3985 and couldn't get them without the entire car set. Also to consider is the combined illuminated cars + tenders set would have an MSRP over $400... big 'ouch'.

It was probably planned that way so if you added the tenders then everything would be together, not necessarily SOLD together.  IIRC that was how the Amfleet packaging was too.  The cars and a P42 could be in one package.  That is also how they package some of the JNR stuff available in Japan.  Two sets of a particular train but packaged so the "A" set holds both while the "B" set only holds that specific set.

It's the same with the packaging of the Kato-made CB&Q "Silver Streak Zephyr".

If I recall correctly, there is additional room for two further E6 locos, which are sold separately: #9910A "Silver Speed" and #9911A "Silver Pilot".

Same with the Penn Central passenger set and with the Amfleet passenger car set. There are blank die-cut foam cradles for additional cars/locos.

This all goes to reveal how few Kato passenger sets I buy. I have this new UP excursion set, the CoLA set, and... uh... that's it. I have some older (10+ years?) bookcase collections, but nothing else. Not really a passenger train modeler, but I do enjoy running the City of Everywhere I've built from odds and ends, and appropriate for my target era.

Hmm... I thought mine came in individual jewel cases like the Corrugated Cars four-packs originally came.

I never owned the Penn Central set, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that it came in a bookcase type of packaging (with blanks for more cars).  But I can't verify that.

The Amtrak set I owned (I sold it since) had 3 blanks for more cars an a loco.  Here is a photo from BLW:

Nahh the Penn Central set just came with 4 jewel cases with a cardboard container..
Same as the Phase 3 Amfleet releases (2 car sets)
and the older Budd releases...
