Not sure if this is product or modeling, but since Woodland Scenics has put out a lot of new product, I figure it goes here.
I have always liked their products. I used a lot of foam risers to expand my old layout when I had it upstairs next to sleeping kids and didn't want to use power tools. They are easier, if more expensive.
Recently, I thought I would try their shaper sheets, for my limited hills on the IHB and bought a roll. They do work as advertised. They have heavy aluminum foil on the back, and some kind of gauze or fiber on the front. The advantage is it is self supporting, eliminating paper wads, cardboard strips, screen, and other sub supports. I did use foam chunks or pieces in key spots to assure clearance near tracks. I am using it to hide a single back track for staging, and it is so stiff I left the top open, added trees to cover, and left it open, rather than connecting to the sky board.
My technique was to cut (scissors or utility knife) to approximate size, rough shape it by hand, attach at bottom, shape and cut the top if necessary. I think the bottom can be attached with staples, liquid nails and even Goo. I tried all three. similarly, it looks like almost any glue will bind two sheets together.
Instructions said to cover with either their "specially formulated" shaper sheet plaster or plaster cloth. Having some left over, I used cloth. With the fibers underneath, the cloth dried with a bit of an interesting texture, although I think its better than just smoothing over the cloth itself. I might cover with another thin layer of plaster or goop for landscaping, but I am not sure I need to.
Anyway, looks like another winner from WS that makes scenery base a bit easier. Yes, a bit more expensive, but probably saves a some time.
