I've been working on a bunch of Bachmann USRA hoppers so I can upgrade my New Haven hopper fleet — switching to Atlas Andrews trucks with FVM wheels, adapting them to accept MTL couplers, stripping and repainting, etcetera.  I've been debating whether or not to run them with the coal load (which look pretty good) or empty with the cross-braces installed (which also look good), and I discovered the installed cross-braces not not interfere with the coal loads.  So it's the best of both scenarios on the model.

Has anyone ever done coal ops with magnetic coal loads that lift out? Are ops like this ever modeled, or do they just take the empties and leave the loads?

Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

John — Yes, but you have to strip and repaint the Pennsy car because the stock deco scheme is totally wrong.  The B&O and WM schemes also are wrong.  I've confirmed the C&O deco is correct.  That leaves the Clinchfield, which I believe is correct but I haven't verified it for certain.

Does anybody have decals in mind for the Pennsy GLd key in ball scheme?

Bryan, that was my next question!  If you are still considering making PRR decals for these, I'm in, and will start strippin!

Any set of CK (Circle Keystone) should work, you may have to piece together the road number though.

Plenty of times!!!....with HO  :D

Now that I'm messing with N scale I've been wondering the same thing. I was thinking Hays Bros loads with a washer or two under it to lift out with a magnet. I just know any other way with my ham hands and it'll be derailment city.

Leave those two holy (road) names out of it, you're creating work for me.

Agreed, a combination of Pennsy sets should yield the desired markings.  Possibly the Microscale's F30 flatcar set for most of the markings and the caboose set for the CK.

Here are very good legible shots of the S Helper Service models deco'd for PRR:

And here's their version of C&O.  The Bachmann version is very close to this, with the only difference being placement of some of the small data.

HO layout I operate on has loads that pop out. Foam base with washer glued to it. Using a magnetic screw retriever that telescopes, very easy to remove the loads when the cars are "empty" and released by the consignee for removal and return to mines.

Pic of the model with the cross-braces installed.  They just snap into place, no glue necessary.

CDS make a set of dry transfer CK decals for the GLa, which would require a minimum of reworking, although they are dry transfer!  :P

The site is a little messy, so I would call first before ordering.  :)
TMR Distributing (Canada) is out of stock ATM.

Mt Vernon Shops have the CK scheme for the G26/G33 gondola, which are wet decals, if you prefer...
http://www.mountvernonshops.com

They also have decals for the GLd in HO!

John has indicated that he would do any of his decal sets in N scale, for an order large enough. (Was 20 sets at some point) A group buy opportunity?

hope this helps....

Cheers,
Scott
