Thanks for the info and dates Carter, it's always appreciated and it was the reason I said "primarily" in my original response. By the late 90s and early 00s, it was far less common to see 40' drop frame trailers OFC, let alone ones with cons stripes, than say 28' straight/drop frames, 45' straight frame and contractor's 48' or greater trailers.

I'll pick up a 40' cons-striped drop frame trailer as an oddball and a bunch more of the non-corner stripe and non-cons-striped units for my roster.

For some reason the 40-drop frames seemed to hang around in the Pacific Northwest.  And yes, the other UPS trailers you mentioned were far more common at the turn of the century, but nearly every time I went to the Nampa yard to photograph trains in the late 1990s and early 2000s, I would see one UPS 40-foot drop frame trailer on a railcar. 

And if you want to see a 40-foot drop frame as late as 2011 with "United Parcel Service" lettering, "drive by" the UPS terminal in Spokane, WA with Google Street View.  It's parked at the southwest corner of the terminal.

Since starting a new job in 2012, I can finally see trains again, after 20 years of seldom seeing anything other than the occasional scrap metal train.  There are very few, if any, railroad owned trailers in today's trains.  What changed?

Love this photo reference Not to side track but was curious about the articulated flat in this picture http://pfe_coi.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3358771 I didn't know they had these types of cars before the spine cars ect, the car in the photo would fit my era and give me some diversity in my intermodal train! Are there any models available of these cars?

I believe that you're seeing the AT&SF 10 Pack Fuel Foiler.  Hard to tell in that picture, but they were white.  I remember that MR had an article on scratchbuilding this car in an early 1980s article (1983?), and I would love to have one on my layout, too.  I am not aware of an actual model of the Fuel Foiler in N scale.  I recall that Con-Cor offered one in the 1980s in HO scale.

I didn't know about the N scale model, but the HO one I owned in the 1980s was terrible.

I believe there was once a good thread by pastoolio on Trainboard about improving the N scale Fuel-foiler.   (But I can't search for it now because their @#$% website won't let me log in.   )

You could kitbash the Santa Fe 10-pack from four Con Cor sets.    Those would set you back $100 or more with current eBay prices, and you have to wait around for them.  Microscale has made decals.    The September 1982 Model Railroader has an article on them with drawings.

Did Alan Curtis make the Fuel Foilers / Impact cars at one stage as well?

I don't see them on the current N Scale Kits site, but that would seem to be a natural fit into Peter's range.... Might be worth an email?
