MTL heavyweight baggage car

The MTL drawing for the 1015 and 1016 show all identical dimensions. It doesn't show shank length. What is the difference in inches between the two?

I tried the 1016-to-1015 swap on the diner last night. You still have to modify the body to clear the back of the knuckle, and it doesn't annount for adding an operating diaphragm. So I did what you did and moved back the 1016. I will see if the baggage is a straight swap when the undecs become available.

Moving back a 1016 is a better solution anyhow unless you have really broad curves. I have taken the 1015's off of the other cars, and replaced them with 1016's moved back. With a 1015 on the car, it's such a short distance between the coupler pivot points, when the ends of the car are offset in a curve the coupling distance varies a lot.









On the longer cars, I also flip the trucks and re-drill the bolster pin hole to the outer end of the car. It makes for less overhang on the vestibule end of the car and as a result, less offset between the ends of the two cars going through yard ladders and such.

One added bonus of flipping the trucks on the diner — it allows the addition of the stirrup under the service door without interfering with the pivot range of the truck.

I moved my couplers back as well...works and looks great!...
another real neat thing about this car is the way MT engineered the location points for the baggage door ladder stirrups...I'm assuming this underframe will be used on future releases.

Thanks for the shots of the M&R sides Bruce.  I am making an executive decision to NOT try to disassemble the couple I have more or less complete on old RR shells.  But my total estimate for MT cars might have been low.  Will need to check on how many unbuilt sides I have when I get home later.  Then will have to add up all the Dearborn station roads that had something close.  I have 2 Erie "in the mail", but if the M&R baggage fit, then the fishbelly and the mail-baggage also fit.

Gonna be busy this summer.  Just extending the station tracks for all the new head end traffic will be a chore.

Wonder how many thousand units we would have to commit to for Joe to move the undecorateds up on the production schedule?

@Chris333 — On this particular "as-built" Erie scheme, should the lettering be gold leaf rather than the non-metallic color used?  Wouldn't the imitation gold be used on the "Railway Express Agency" version of the pre-1950 all-green scheme?
