The GN was said to aquire those 15 PS-1s in order to obtain xperience relative to the effect of the cushion underframe on lading damage. They were placed into general freight service. In September of 1958 eight cars were euipped with D-F loaders for participation in a pool to handle household appliances from the General Electric Co. plant in Louisville, Kentucky. The major reason these were picked for the purpose was the 8' door width necessary for forklift loading of large household appliances. The conversion included the repainting into the loader scheme of top half of sides orange, rest of car green. In September of 1959 an additional three cars were outfitted to handle products from Whirlpool Corporation at Evansville, Indiana. Previous to Sep 1959 the GN had handled the following loads of electrical refrigerators and coolers from the Evansville plant: 1957 - 32 cars to West Coast via Minneapolis 2 cars to Canadian destinations via Minneapolis to Winnipeg 16 cars fo Fargo via Minneapolis 1958 - 45 cars to West Coast via Minneapolis 2 cars to Great Falls, Mont. via Minneapolis I cxar to Edmonton, Alberta 7 car to Fargo 6 months of 1959 - 25 cars cars to West Coast via Minneapolis 1 car to Great Falls, Mont. 1 car to Edmonton 1 car to Minot via Mpolis. 5 cars to Fargo via Mpolis
Thank you to both of you! If "Staffan" is Staffan Ehnbom, he is one of the GN Ry Hist. Society's most prolific researcher/writers, doing numerous reference sheets on freight cars.
if the GN PS-1s were bought as part of the 100 Lot 8160 cars to be used in an Appliance Pool, why wouldn't they be that way until the Pool was dissolved,or larger cars replaced the 40' cars in that Pool ?
